I agree with REnate. I think that you should hold off until you are settled down. Who knows when you move out on your own you might get an apartment where no pets are allowed and then what do you do, dump the dog and cat OR where you can have one pet, which do you keep the dog or the cat??? There are already other animals at your families house, why can't you just help care for them?

though the time may not be right for you to get a dog based on what you stated. The most important thing when and if the time comes is to look at your life style to determine the best breed. AKC offers on their website a breakdown of breeds and will inform you of the type of dog, it's activity level etc. Basing your lifestyle when picking a breed will help ensure that the dog you get will be suitable and will not eventually end up in foster or pound as you did not know what you were getting at the time. Just be sure to research based on what you are doing in life.

Well if you be getting your own place soon then I would recommend taking your cat with you and visiting your area humane society and adopting a dog from there. You will need to get a dog that will get along with your cat, make sure your parents will be able to take care of your dog and cat when you need to travel. If you get your new dog into the habit of going for walks so he can go pee and have his craps, make sure your parents will be able to continue his walks when you are travelling. If you can, find a poodle mix. Like a poodle and Cocker Spaniel mix, the breed is called a cockapoo. Or try to find a poodle and Lhasa Apso mix. Both are medium to small type breeds with nice fur, but thier fur does mat if it gets too long.

Why don't you spend some time volunteering at a shelter - then you could get to know more about different breeds and temperaments. Dogs take a LOT of time - !!! - and it's of course totally worth every minute, but you need to be aware of the huge time commitment that you're thinking about, all of the poop you'll be cleaning up, and the cost of training classes, etc.

Ditto to REnate. Until you know more about where you will be living you should hold off on purchasing a dog (or any pet). Enjoy the animals that are currently living at your family home for now and when you are more settled and have more direction in your life and time to devote exclusively to a pet, you will know what to get when the time is right.

I'd recommend a breed that is demure, you don't want to add a hyper dog to and already hyper environment. A Wheaton Terrier comes to mind. Great dog(s) can't say enough about them!

Think you should hold off on acquiring a dog. You do not know where you will get a job or where you will be living. You may not be able to take care of the dog when you get a job and are not living with your family. Who is going to take care of the dog and the cat when you travel???
