I'm 21, married, and both my husband and I have no future plans to have children.

I have severe PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) and it takes a toll on our marriage. Medications have not helped. I would just like to get rid of periods altogether. What can I do to ELIMINATE PMDD? (not just relieve the symptoms of it)

I also have endometriosis and a prolapsed uterus that causes me a great deal of pelvic pain.

I think a full hysterectomy is out of the question, not because bearing children would no longer be an option, but because of the hormonal shift I would experience.

I do not want a treatment that will permanently affect our sex life.

Please help me find out what treatment options are available.

The only way to permanently eliminate the menstrual cycle is a hystorectomy and most doctors would not conduct this on a woman so young unless it was truly life threatening. There is however a birth control pill called Seasonale that you can take that causes the menstrual cycle to occur only 4 times a year and I vaguely recall hearing on the Today Show about a pill that does suspend it indefinitely. But as with any birth control pill, if you stop taking it, your cycle returns. I don't recall the name but I'd ask my GYN if I were you.

It's simply a matter of ceasing your periods. I take birth control pills all of the time with a period once every 5-6 months or so. Ask your OB-GYN. THis is a very good option that leaves your fertility intact, but stops your periods for up to 6 months at a time. I do it because I have severe anemia - to keep from losing blood by heavy periods. I don't see why it wouldn't work for you as well. You just take the ACTIVE pills every day and never the placebo pills. When the placebo pill week is supposed to begin, I just start a new pack of pills - with the active pills again, and so on.

There are a certain type of birth control shot that you can get from you obgyn that will keep you from getting it for I think about 6 months. If I were you I would talk to my doctor to see if this is a good option for you.

Birth control is an option but I would strongly suggest that you set up a consultation with your physician...you don't really want to play with stuff like that. Good luck!
