We are taking a week long vacation to the beach with another couple. We have a young (less than 1 year) gold capped conure. It will require traveling in the car for 7-8 hours, (1 way). I am not sure if it will be more stressful for the bird to take him with us, or if it would be more stressful for him to be away from us for a week. If we left him at home, my mom could come every day to feed him and spend a little time with him. Help!

I travel with mine. We drive about 7 hours one way too. She would rather be with me than without. Here's a website that might help you out, it's about traveling with your bird. http://www.petpublishing.com/birdtimes/articles/travel.shtml

It depends on you??? I take my birds everywhere with me. Which can be a hassle for me! lol. But, it is a great time to bond with your bird!!! make sure his wings are clipped, get him a harness, and let him hang out on your shoulder for the ride. a small pet carrier will do they cost about $15 put a perch in there with food and water and let him go in there occassionally during the trip. he should be fine. You should have a great time with your bird! he's part of the family and should go. It would be far too stressful to leave my birds for a week! I take them everywhere even if I'm only going to be gone 5 hours or so. They enjoy their rides and time with us. See, I'm completely different than the person above. My birds are part of my family. How can I go on a family trip without taking the family??? that would be selfish.

Leave the birds at home - it is a lot more stressful for the birds to have a change of location & journey than to have a change of owner.

Leave the bird at home and enjoy your vacation! Your mother will look after him each day, and you won't have to spend your vacation worried if the bird is stressed because you brought him along. Leave him at home, relax, and enjoy yourself!
