Don't waste your time majoring in CJ. Any degree at all is just as meaningful. A CJ degree is absolutely useless outside of law enforcement should you decide you don't like it or if you want to do something else after you retire. Try business or something like that so you have more options.
There are plenty of law enforcement jobs out there in most states. Its a little harder in states that use a civil service exam because many times the most qualified people are passed over. Good luck.

Police officers can make alot, it depends on what city you work for. A richer city will pay their officers alot more. My fiancee worked for Torrance PD, in SoCal and made around $80k a year after his 5th year. Their starting salary is $54k per year, definitely in the top ten highest paid departments in the country.
They are always hiring. Younger recruits mean a new generation to pass down the knowledge to, and bring in new ideas and ways of looking at things. If you are the type of person they are looking for and keep out of trouble, you should have no problem getting hired.
Some departments do have hiring freezes, because of lack of funds. If you are serious about a job as a police officer, then you should be willing to relocate and find the best department to work for. Good luck!
to add: getting a degree in CJ is not that important. Departments are looking for personality types, clean backgrounds, and most importantly life experience. A cop once told me, one thing he regretted was spending his time in college learning about Criminal Law, which you learn in the academy. He said he should have had a backup and got a degree in business or something to fall back on.
