Smudging sage is better than using incense to clear the crystals. However, it is most important what your intention is about cleansing the crystals than the method you use to cleanse them. Depending on the crystals, amethyst and rose quartz are ok to place under running water to cleanse them, but some crystals do not appreciate water.

You can also hold the crystals over a candle flame to purify with light, or draw down light, use Reiki or any other energetic vibration to cleanse the crystals.

If the crystals are really filled with negative energy or have been used for a long time – you can place them in a bowl filled with sea salt of soil. This will help to recharge them deeply, though takes longer the more negative energy the crystal has.

With any of these methods, just set the intention that your crystals will be completely cleared of all that is not of your highest and greatest good and that is not of the crystals highest and greatest good.

It depends on what kind of incense it is. As somebody already mentioned, some kinds of incense charge an item with energy, not purify it.

The best bet for purifying crystals, in my opinion (I don't work with them very often) is to bury them in a dish of salt or immerse them in salt water for a few days. (Check with the store where you bought them to make sure the crystals will survive this treatment!)

Another technique would be to place them in in the moonlight on the night of the full moon and for two days after (a total of three days of the waning moon). If you wanted to empower the crystals instead of cleanse them, you would place them in the moonlight on the night of the full moon and for two nights previous (three days of the waxing moon).

Hope this helps. :-)

You can but not throughly cleansed. I suggest you cleanse with salt water and then put them under the sun for 20 to 30 minutes.

Actually allowing them to rest in a small pile of sea salt is better. I have tried incense, it doesn't ever seem to quite do the job in my opinion.

(smirk) I usually don't purify mine to look cool, but you go right ahead, their your stones.

You can hold them under running water, yes. Be advised that some stones will precipitate into water, calcite for example.
