Once you place your number in their registry, the calls will be reduced. The only calls you will still get are calls from businesses you have worked with in the past, political calls, calls from non-profit organizations, and of course to people you give your number out to.
Once you are on the list, you can tell people that you are on the "Do not call" list and tell them to take your name off the list.
I had done telemarketing for 2 days! But I did learn that if the person they are looking for pretends to be someone else, and the person says "take me off the list", they won't. They need to hear it from the person they are looking for.

There is a national "do not call" list. Just go to the web and do a search. Once your name and number appears on the list, you should stop receiving calls. If you do get a call, telling the telemarketer that your on the list, and they will hang up or apologize and then hang up. If they don't, you can file a complaint against that company and they get fined $10,000 for every call.

All these answers are wrong. There is no enforcement available for the "no call list". You can place your number on it, but if they call, you still have to file under the same process you would if you didn't get on the list.
You have to tell them to stop "in writing". Then if they call again, file a restraining order. if they call after that, you can have them arrested and possibly close the company.
I have concerns that the "do not call" list is building a contact database, but I have no evidence of it.

Contact the Secretary of state in your state. They can give you the number. I've got to warn you though, it only pertains to sales calls. Solicitations for donations are exempt as are polls. There are several other exemptions, I guess the point I'm making is the no call list is a joke.
