I am applying for a chinese tourist visa, and I am curious...should I ask for 60-days duration or ask for 30-days and get an extension while I am in Beijing?

...Also, if I were to ask for 60 days and it was not granted, would they just deny it or change it to 30-days?

I get the impression they don't really care, unless you offend them in some way you can stay for a year. A lot of things happen unofficially there. Best to get the 60 if you're going to use it, no sense wasting time at a consulate in china.

Applicant for Chinese tourist Visa are rarely decline, China government invest heavily on tourism and the standard of living there are quite low, So there is slim possibility that people go to China on a tourist visa just for work. So I suggest you apply for the 60 days one, Yes if your request for 60 days visa was rejected they would not change it to 30 days, Hope it help!

I would not count on getting an extension while you are Beijing. You should apply for the duration you need and plan accordingly.

Ask for 60 days. The only reason they might deny it is if you have a criminal record.
