"What was it that Adam ate that he wasn't supposed to eat? It wasn't just an apple. It was the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The subtle message? 'Get smart and I'll f*** you over' sayeth the Lord. God is the smartest, and he doesn't want any Competition. Is this not an absolutely anti-intellectual religion?"
--Frank Zappa

Thanks to the Great Gazoo for informing us of this wonderful quote. Yes, Frank was eccentric, to put it mildly. This quote is remarkably true of the biblical god. Zappa hit this one right on the head, in my opinion.

It is certainly in line with the church's desire to destroy the gnostic gospels, which taught that Jesus spoke about enlightenment, NOT salvation.

But do most creators want their creations to be smarter that they themselves are???.....If your talking literal. But really its all just a fanastic story to keep the masses in line. So of course they want to keep you dumb and in the dark.

With all due respect to Frank (I still remember Phi Zappa Krappa), I think he misunderstood some things. First it's a story. It's an early attempt to explain the relationship of God and man. Second, out of this story arises some interesting questions, such as "Didn't God expect man to do exactly what he did?" Did God really want a couple of automotons in the garden? Isn't it through knowledge that we can understand our suffering and frailty, but also truly appreciate the wonders of life? These are questions the story doesn't answer, but make the story timeless.

Further, with all due respect to gnostics, isn't it believed that salvation is imparted through enlightenment, as opposed to enlightenment for its own sake?

Just one other note on the gnostics. I have this belief that if gnosticism had become the predominant view of Christianity in the early days, that it really would have had some difficulty catching on. It would have lacked the "structure" that as inflexible as it was, at least provided standardization.

That being said, when the early church threw out the gnostics, they threw away a whole branch of the early church and a distinct line of its beauty and mysticism.

I love the ones on here who try to explan the difference b/t Knowledge and knowledge of sin. I guess it just future proves ignorance is bliss. If you don't know its wrong before you do it, I can really punish you afterwards. How nice that god already had the world outside the garden just ready and waiting for them to screw up. I imagine a cartoon character jumping up and down going "hehehehe do it do it"

Either way--Zappa was wonderfully creative. But you know what I've always wondered--I know they were created in his image but--

How damn ugly were Adam and Eve that once they knew they were naked, it ruined the whole vacation?

Cause personally.....a naked vacation with your man in paradise sounds like the way it SHOULD be!

This is a good question. A more accurate description of the "tree of knowledge" would be the "tree of the knowledge of evil". What man did when he ate the fruit was become aware of evil and accountable for his actions and his thoughts. God gave man everything. God walked with the man in the evening and taught him, answering all his questions. Christianity is a faith based in knowledge, not ignorance. Throughout the bible we are commanded to study and improve in understanding. Sadly, not all Christians do this, but neither do many people who question the bible.

It is not enough to ask questions, we should also seek answers based on scholarship - not rock stars opinions.

God warned Adam that eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil would result in death. In other words making him human. Adam and Eve lived with God in Heaven until they ate from the tree. After eating the fruit they became aware of their nakedness (which they had no clue of before). God also gave woman the ability to bear children with pain and suffering and even so she would still welcome relations with her husband. God gave the man hard work to make a living (with the soil then) but it pertains today. God banished them from the garden of Eden and they began the human race. Adam and Eve had a choice to make, they were tempted and made the wrong choice. God did NOT "screw them or us over". Had nothing to do with competition, read the Bible and understand before making these non-sensical comments.

I say, it sounds like something Zappa would say.
I don't use celebrities to justify my beliefs on much one way or the other. But they certainly make interesting reading.

It was in the church's best interest to get rid of the Gnostic gospels. It was the goal of the church from the beginning to get power and maintain it. That is why the church didn't translate the Bible.

Hi Gorgeous,
I believe that Primoa hit the nail on the head. I vote for him. I believe that the Bible is inspired by GOD thru the HOLY SPIRIT and that CHRIST came so that we would have an opportunity to be in Heaven with HIM. Have a great day and a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds

That quote has an obvious misunderstanding of the Bible. It was always God's intention that they have the knowledge of good and evil. Otherwise why would he have created the World outside of the garden that they were banished into?

And the whole Jesus taught enlightenment is just propaganda, don't believe something just because you like the way it sounds.
