I think I'm about to get the horrible news that my dog has cancer. I know so much depends on how serious it is, but are there any suggestions on how to deal with this and make the battle less painful. I'm not sure I'd want to put her through a bunch of chemo. She is young and healthy....an Aussie Sheppard mix.

This is great info and maybe I should be more open-minded to chemo. Also, thanks for your well wishes. This is very tough, especially for my wife.

Our family is dealing with the same thing as our 9 year old Lab mix (not as young, but still spaztic enough to not be old) has been diagnosed with cancer. She has a Mast Cell Tumor, and we are just coming out of a financial catastrophe and don't have the money to have her operated on. While scrimping and borrowing the money, we have found that, by and large, changing the animal's diet seems to have a tremendous effect.

http://www.dogcancer.net has an insane amount of info including tips on changing the dog's diet.

I'm very sorry to hear this, that's an awful thing for any dog, especially a young one.

Talk through the options with your vet - if she is young, and has a good chance of being fixed by chemo I would go for it. Otherwise it's a matter of time and seeing how is goes, and symptomatic treatment when the cancer starts to affect her. You'll know if and when the times comes to put her to sleep if her quality of life is gone.

I hope it's good news after all!

I am sorry to hear about your pup. There are meds that help with the pain. The only option that I really know about is chemo or surgery. You might want to talk to your vet and see if they have any suggestions. I have seen plenty of success stories with the chemo, but every dog is different. I wish you the best of luck.

The thing about chemo is that it doesn't affect dogs like it does humans. They generally feel better after treatments. They don't lose their hair or have nausea. Your vet will be able to give you options. Good luck.
