Just looking through my POH, and the props can be from 67.5 to 69". Is it really that hard to make them all the same length? It sounds like poor craftsmanship.

The question has been answered, but here is more info. When taking off the high thrust sucks debris off the runway, this may include sand, pebbles, and even bolts and rivits that fall off other planes. All of this debris wears and damages the ends of the propeller. A mechanic will "dress" the propeller end, removing some of its length, and re-balance it. That is why the propeller blades get shorter over time. As stated in your POH, if the propeller gets smaller than a diameter of 67.5" it must be replaced.

All new props are 69 inches in diameter. If necessary dressing shortens the prop it can be as short as 67.5 inches, then it has to be replaced.
All aircraft specs list a maximum and minimum diameter.

has it exactly right. by "dressing" means filing the edges so there are no nicks in them. over time, the prop becomes shorter.

Actually, props have to be made to exact specifications and balance, otherwise you could have a harmonic vibration that could shake the airplane apart.
