Blood tests, blood sugar tests, Urine tests to test for high levels of sugar. Be ready to gibe your dog insulin shots if he or her is diagnosed with diabates. My dog has diabates and we need to give him 2 insulin shots a day, 12 hours apart after he has something to eat. Plus we need to collect samples of his Urine on test it up to 4 times a dog to see if the insulin he is getting is the right amount or too little.

They would conduct a glucose curve to rule out diabetes mellitus; take a picture of the pituitary gland to determine if there is a tumor; and check for other conditions such a renal failure etc.
They'd probably conduct a water deprivation test, after all, DI is a disorder of water balance in the dogs body.
They'd probably do an ADH (antidiuretic hormone) test with and without DDAVP (the drug used to treat DI). They'd test the ability to concentrate urine in the kidneys before and after injecting DDVAP.

Diabetes Insipidus
What is diabetes insipidus?
Diabetes insipidus is a hormonal disease caused either by under-production of a hormone called ADH, or by failure of the kidneys to respond normally to ADH even though it is being produced in normal amounts. ADH, or "anti-diuretic hormone" is a substance normally produced by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. Its function is to promote water resorption by the kidney, thus conserving body water and making the urine less dilute.
What are the signs of diabetes insipidus?
(1) excessive urination, very dilute urine (2) excessive drinking (more than 100ml per kilogram of body weight per day) (3 )possible dehydration and weight loss
Can diabetes insipidus be treated?
If the diabetes insipidus is caused by inadequate production of ADH then it can be treated by giving the animal synthetic ADH in the form of a nasal spray or eye drops.
If the condition is caused by inadequate response to ADH by the kidneys then there is no specific treatment. A low sodium diet may help, and certain drugs that increase sodium reabsorption by the kidney may help to reduce the volume of urine produced

Diabetes is usually treated through a combination of diet (low sugar), exercise and medications/insulin. Milder cases can be controlled with just diet an/or exercise while more severe cases require meds or insulin as well.
