Putting him in a big bed does take away the need to worry about him getting hurt as he tries to clamber out of a crib. But be aware that if he's in a big bed, he'll be able to move about during the night (and maybe even leave his room in search of you), which could be inconvenient. If you're potty training your child, though, a bed makes more sense than a crib since he will need to get to the bathroom when necessary. In any case, there is no set time that you should get rid of your child's crib and have him sleep in a bed, although most children make the move sometime between ages 1 1/2 and 3 1/2.
I see you say your son is a good sleeper,so you can start transitioning from brib to bed now and see what happens. Just make sure bed has rails and you put a rug on the floor ,just in case he falls when he gets up.

I moved all three of my children into "toddler beds" by the age of 18 months. And into "Big Kids" beds by the time they were 3. My son got a captains bed and my daughters got bunk beds. However I am expecting my fourth and I plan on keeping him in his crib until he starts to climb out. But at a daycare center children are put onto cots as soon as they hit 1 year old. So if your children are in daycare (mine weren't but I worked for daycares for 7 years) then why not transition them and be consistent.

As long as he is sleeping well in his crib I would continue that for a while. I usually put mine in a toddler bed sometime between 18 months to 2 years. My oldest was climbing out at 18 mos so she was moved then.
Good luck,

I would keep him in a crib until you need the crib for another baby, or until he starts to climb out of it.
My daughter is 2 1/2, and is still in her crib, and loves it. Once he can climb out, it's a safety thing.
So, if he's happy in it, and there's no safety issue... not a problem! My daughter's crib makes into a daybed. If another year passes and she's still not climbing out, we'll probably make it into a 'big girl bed', just to make her feel more grown up.
Don't rush it though, unless there's a safety reason. Enjoy the time while you know they're where you put them!

I've put mine in their own bed at around 12 months, but I based that mainly on them being confident walkers at that age(and being able to safely get in and out of the bed).
They both went in to their own bed (with a removable side guard and a child gate on their bedroom door) and I had absolutely no problems.
No tantrums, no stress and no sleep disturbance. Far easier than friends had it at 2yrs old!
You may well have to 'return' them to bed the first night or so as getting out is a novelty but as long as you're firm and calm about them getting back in and going to sleep you'll have no dramas!
Do what you feel confident with though-you're the parent and you know him better than we do!
Good luck.

I waited until my kids were close to three. They were good sleepers, and happy in their cribs, so I figured why rock the boat. Plus by three, they could understand when I told them they had to stay in their beds, easier to reason with. They transitioned very easily. Good luck!
