OK, I know a lot about this, although I have never used such substances...never...
Ideally, ecstasy is supposed to be 100% crystallized MDMA.
It rarely is. Most dealers make a mixture of various substances, including diphenhydramine, DXM, caffeine, MDA, meth, etc...and they sell it as "ecstasy". Today, ecstasy is really any small 250mg pill that has any or all of these substances. Do a Yahoo Search for Ecstasy Data to find the EcstasyData.org website that tells you the exact chemical compositions of the different pills.
If you get pure MDMA, you are lucky. MDMA is a methamphetamine. Chemically, it is exactly the same as methamphetamine (MA) with a methylenedioxy-group (MD) on the far side of the benzene ring. This causes the following effects:
1) Sped up! You will feel ready to win the friggin' Olympics. All of the energy from classic meth is found with this substance.
2) Everything you do will be the greatest thing you've ever done. If you sit down, you'll want to keep sitting for the rest of your life because it's so fun. If you start walking, you'll want to keep walking for the rest of your life because it's so fun. The MD group releases almost all your serotonin, and makes you feel incredibly happy about everything. Breathing the air is incredible. Touching your scalp is incredible.
3) You will NOT want to have sex. In fact, most men cannot get an erection while on MDMA.
4) You are going to call everyone on your cellphone contacts list to see if they're doing OK.
5) You are going to grind your teeth like crazy, and it will be the greatest thing you've ever done.
People who die from "ecstasy" do so for one of two reasons:
1) They are getting an impure pill, most likely DXM. DXM is very dangerous at doses over 50mg.
2) They are taking WAY too much. Over 250mg at a single time is dangerous. Spread out over a number of hours, though, I've read online of individuals who have consumed over 1.5grams in less than a day and have been fine (no hospital/doctor/etc).
I do NOT condone use of illegal substances, and I would never do so myself...
...but, if one WAS to decide to do so, it is important to be smart about it. Know what you're putting in your body. Two pills may look exactly the same...#1 could be all MDMA or MDA or MA, and it would be fine...#2 could be all DXM or something else, and you could theoretically die.
OK, I had to add this section after reading the other responses:
1) IT DOES NOT MAKE HOLES IN YOUR BRAIN! That's like saying "It angers the tooth fairy, so she won't give you as much", hehe.
2) It does not kill most people. There is a higher percentage of alcohol related deaths/hospitalizations than every type of amphetamine combined.
3) Again, this whole sex thing is a myth for guys. Girls WILL want to have sex, guys won't.
Answerers, PLEASE don't write about things you don't know about. I'm a friggin Chemical Engineer. Pharmaceuticals are a specialty. Not everything the D.A.R.E. officer told you in 4th grade was true.

Firstly, ignore EVERYTHING the media has to say as it is often politically motivated and devoid of any proven scientific fact.
The use of ecstasy has grown massively due to it's cost (most people would rather pay £2 for a pill that lasts all night than be ripped off to the tune of £5 or more for a double vodka + coke). Yes, a few people have died as a result of taking it, but thousands die from alcohol related problems every year.
As was stated in a previous answer, it is statiscally very safe, but it of course should never be taken by anyone who doesn't know anything about it.
The active ingredient in ecstasy is M.D.M.A. (I won't put what that stands for as unless you're studying advanced organic chemistry it'll mean nothing), and a pill can contain anything from washing powder to flour as a result of unscrupulous 'cutting' of the drug. M.D.M.A. can also be found in it's pure form, though NOBODY should try it in this form if they've never had it in pill form as the risks, though still small, are increased dramatically.
It's effects, in general (I can only talk from personal experience and I don't use it often; I take maybe a total of 2 or 3 pills a year) are a feeling of acute contentness and an increased appreciation of friendship and love (and no, I'm not a hippy) as well as the removal of tiredness and the uncontrollable urge to chew. It also affects the area of the brain responsible for controlling the body's water levels, resulting in the shutting down of the kidneys in this respect. This is where it can be dangerous; drink too little water and you can dehydrate, too much and you can die of water toxification due to (I think) excess water being osmotically absorbed into cells, causing them to burst; the more susceptible cells being mainly in the brain. The deaths you hear about are usually caused by this.
I can't comment on comedowns as I've never had one (probably due to the small amounts I take), though you will wake up (assuming you can sleep) desparate for the loo as once it wears off your kidneys go into overdrive to empty the excess water from your body.
All in all, if you do try ecstasy, don't have more than 1 tablet (half of one should be more than enough really), don't get it from some dodgy bloke in the club toilets and make sure you're with friends who know about it, at least one of them not being on it or anything else (including alcohol) and above all are responsible.
If you're out clubbing and can afford to, stick with alcohol. Not for health reasons, simply because you won't get arrested if you're caught with it.

It's spelt Ecstasy for starters and I remember there was a lot in the news about the dangers of taking it because it causes you to get very dehydrated when you use it and people on it have drunk so much water that it has caused their brains to swell up and they've died.
Of course not having taken it myself I can't decide whether this is a myth or a fact. What I do know is that it's a social drug, often used when you go dancing in clubs or parties and in my view personally is not worth the risk!
Perhaps you could ask Frank for more details?

i saw a thing on tv and it works by constricting your blood vessells in your brain. this is why some people die from it. because they have weaker than normal blood vessells in thier brains. also, like any drug you can build up a tolerance to it. then if you quit and go back to how you regularly took it before you quit then it can kill you immediately because your body loses the tolerance. i guess its the same with any drug. but the show said thats how most people actually accidently have drug overdoses. just some good info to know. by the way its not true what the previous person said, "that if you have more than one tablet you will die." maybe at first but once you build up a tolerance you need more. i personally know people that do three or more at a time.......not good!

Its illegal and bad for you in the long run. It is psychologically addictive. It can be cut down with anything from amphetamines to MDMA to chalk dust.
Upon taking it, it will increase the flow of serotonin to the receptors in your brain drastically. Once it wears off the Serotonin has been depleted for a while and that creates a 'come down' as your body has trouble producing the serotonin and your body is exhausted from the exertion.

Really really bad!! Makes life seem wonderful and you get hyper, feel really happy, can increase sex drive, makes u wana dance all night. But makes you really dehydrated and can have nasty side effects. Also many people have died from taking it, and people try and sell fakes to rip people off, often these fakes can contain rat poison and other horrid stuff! Or if you have too high a concentration or take too many tablets it can be lethal. BAD BAD idea and i would so advise you to stay away from it forever!!

The best way to learn about it is to google it. There are all kinds of websites that talk about it. You can also read about many people's personal experiences with it.

Well as far as I know about it, over a period of time, it starts to make holes in your brain. And thats an easy way for you to get cancer in your brain and/or become mentally ill.
