When semis are on the interstate and they pass you, they often times will flash their trailer lights. Does anyone know why?

Semi trucks are very long and it's hard for them to tell when it's safe to come over (that's why they're often still in the left lane when a car can cut to the right lane and pass). Often, semi drivers will communicate to each other to let them know that it's safe to change lanes. One will flash his lights to say it's safe to change, then the other will flash his brakes to say thank you for letting me know. I rarely get the courtesy directed at me, but i always feel special when I do.

the flashing of the trailer lights is just a way to say THANK_YOU and HAVE A GOOD DAY,
but please do not flash your bright lights when a truck is safe to pass...think about it the driver is looking in the mirror to see when the trailer has passed and you flash your bright lights... you in turn blind the driver and he loses his night vision...do you really want 80,000 pounds pulling back in your lane with a driver that can not see because he is blinded by your bright lights?
better that turn off and then back on your lights ..or do nothing at all...when the drive has cleared you he will return to his lane

Drivers of trucks have many blind spots to contend with. When passing another truck, the one being passed will signal by flashing their headlights that it is safe to pull back into the lane. They then flash their clearance lights as a gesture of thanks. Keep in mind that you can never assume anything though, always use your own judgement that it is truly safe to move out or move back over. This applies to all drivers!

When they blink there lights it means "Thank you". If you blink your lights when a truck is wanting to change lanes (That your in) It tells the trucker that it is safe to change lanes. The trucker will flash his lights back at you as a way to say Thank you.

In our dreams maybe. In real life working 15 hour shifts doesn't leave much time for anything else. These days when parked up it seems to be pot noodles and either the computer or TV. In you Dad's time there was more social life to lorry driving but the pay was poor. It was common to spend the evenings in pubs or cafés but most drivers were just of for a laugh and a chat.
