The theoretical carrying capacity of the planet, in terms of food production, is about 20 billion. Based on energy demands for a 'comfortable' standard of living; with current technology, the earth's long-term capacity is about 500 million.

Define comfortable. Logically I would take this to mean the MINIMUM number of people to maintain the current state of human technology and culture. Add another 10% or so to allow for continued advancement of the human race and you'd end up with a whole lot fewer than we are now. Say 1% of current population level.

It can "comfortably" hold considerably fewer than there are right now.

The maximum before we start seriously killing each other for food and territory is probably about 8 billion (not that far away!).
