Why do mormons have to donate 10% of their pay to the church?

Why are people who are struggling compelled to put money in the plate? (and don't say they're not, I saw too much of it as a child).

If the bible were true, won't it hold up on it's own without these giant corporations pushing it on people?

Growing up Mormon, I saw and learned much. As an adult, out from my mothers cacoon, I left the Mormon Church, if you go back through the history of the church you will see a church built on lies, and false doctrine. No where in the Bible does it say give the church 10%. It does say much about charity and helping the poor, but the Mormon church is far from poor. Just look at the temples they build. Does the Bible say "build temples and neglect the poor"? No but perhaps the BOM does, I don't know never read it and never will.

Read the church history, dig and dig some more, and you will find a disturbing history, check out the links below and learn about the Mormon forgery murders (of which HINKELY was apart) check out the books Salamander Murders, and Mormon Murders.

Tithing is also a form of obedience. Paying tithing is quite hard, especially when money is tight.
When I pay tithing I receive many blessing both spiritual and temporal. When my husband and I first got married we were quite poor. Due to certain events we were homeless, I was pregnant, my husband couldn't work and I was working part-time at a store called Dollarama. The LDS church found us a nice place to live with an LDS family. They also paid our rent (from other peoples tithe) and they also gave us food from the bishops storehouse where my husband and I volunteered (as a way to pay back the church) I always payed tithing, even when my work cut my hours down to 5 hours a week (I don't think they liked the fact that I was pregnant) The church then helped us get back on our feet, now we are financially secure and have a healthy happy baby (thanks to all the food we got!) If faithful members hadn't payed tithing I do not know where we would be right now. When I pay tithing I think of people that the LDS church helps (not just members, they help others too) and I am extremely grateful.
Also Mormons do not pay church leaders. All church leaders
(unless retired or whatever) have another job that pays, they do not get paid by our tithing. If we didn't pay tithing who would pay to have the lights on in our church buildings? We can;t just rely on rich people. Everyone needs to contribute. Heavenly Father gave me my family, I couldn't ask for any more even if I have to eat off the floor.

Tithing is an opportunity for us to show faith and to give with a cheerful heart.

We don't give 10% we keep 90%.

My family has paid tithing as long as we have been members of the LDS church. There are eight children in my family and my Dad is in the Army. Suffice it to say for a long time he did not make enough money to provide easy life, but we have always been blessed with what we needed.

I have seen this in my own life too.

BTW--Mormons don't pass around a plate. Tithing is given privately. Not in front of everyone so people will be boastful in their hearts.

If you knew where the tithing actually went you probably wouldn't have asked this question.

The LDS church does not have paid clergy.

We don't "have to" do anything. Our church does not push anything on us. If we struggle..(it's not because of paying tithes) the tithing donated from other member's helps those that need it.Our church does not require we show anything to prove our income as someone stated. In Old testament times it was required to give of your flock. Since we don't do animal sacrifices we give 10% of our income- It is used to build our churches and to maintain them. It is used to build our Temples and Maintain them. It is used to feed the hungry, buy the sick medicine, help member's and non-members alike pay housing bill's and utilities. We send our youth on activities together every week (in which many non-member friends are invited) and the churches tithes pay for them as well. Our church has a storehouse in almost every city that is used for people that need food. We have "Deseret Industries", I am sure some of you have been there. Items are donated and people with disability's or are down on their luck are trained to work and are paid, when they otherwise might have been unemployable any where else. I have seen lives changed because of this 10% offering that is given to our Church from our members. Our church does so much globally as well. We were there right after Katrina with food, clothing, and kits with toiletries. We provided shelter in our churches to those who had nowhere to go.Some of our missionary's are able to serve because of these funds. I could go on for days... I hope this helps answer your question. ** We do it because we want to** and we are showing God we don't put our faith in money. Also our Bishop's and leader's do not get paid, anyone who serves does it for the Lord.

Some churches spend the money they collect wisely, with the understanding that some of it comes from families whose finances are strained.

Other churches have the attitude that money begets money and they offend me and perhaps God by extravagant displays that do not forward the word of God or help the masses. I live near the headquarters for the Trinity Broadcasting System and the opulence displayed in that facility is disgusting and a turn off. But it doesn't turn me off to God, just them and the fact they get so many people sending in their hard earned money so that they can keep their thousands of light bulbs lit and piss off the entire neighborhood. What a waste of energy and money.

First, God gave us everything we have. What we do with all that is up to us. And if we have successes in our lives, making money or whatever, then tithing is giving back a very small portion of what we gain.

Second, it's not that GOD needs it, it's used to further His kingdom here on earth.

When I joined the LDS church, tithing was not a hard concept for me to grasp, because the Methodist church I grew up in always encouraged their members to tithe.

Everything you have from your money to every breath you take is a gift from God. When you place yourself, instead of Christ the Lord, on the "throne of your life", life is all about me...me...me, rather than "how can I serve God?" Tithing is done out of obedience to God's command...offerings go beyond 10%. It's a sacrifice to give this money -- yet, like the sacrificial animals were the first born...so too should our tithes and offerings be. They show that our faith is with the Lord rather than with men. God does not need our money...we need to sacrifice and give to God...it helps set our faith, thankgivings, and trust on the Lord.

I don't know about Mormons but Christians are not required to tithe. The Bible says to give with a happy heart.

All the cattle on a thousand hills are His: The Bible.

It is not that God needs your money, it is already his.

It is an act of thanksgiving and sacrifice. It is giving back a part of what is given to you as thanks for what you have

There would be no giant corporations if it wasn't for your 10%. But to be fair, it is ordered by God, although only in the Old Testament, I think, which debunks the myth that we no longer are obliged to keep the OT laws.
Also, to be fair again, priests and ministers would not be able to survive, nor would churches be ablt to be run without it.
