The puppy is following him everywhere, playing with him. I separate them periodically so my big boy can get some space, but he still seems sad. Am I imagining things? What can I do to cheer up my older dog?

You older dog thinks that the puppy is going to be getting all the attention now, you need to show him that he is still an important part of your life and that you still love him. Get down on the floor and pat him, play catch with him and show him that he is not being forgotten. Remember that dogs are like little kids, do you have a younger sister or brother. If so, how did you feel when your parents came home from the hospital with him or her. Your older dog is feeling this way and needs you to show him that he's still loved.

For 2 years, he was the only one in your doggy life, and now, there is a new addition that is getting allot of attention. It will take some time for him to get used to latest family member. The puppy wants to play, which is understandable, your 2 year old feels like his space has been invaded by this crazy baby :) Just make sure that you show your older dog attention and love, reassure him that you love him. It won't happen over night, but eventually you'll have a happy family again and they will become friends and companions.

Dogs really are very sensitive. Especially if they have had your full attention for 2 years, without having to fight for your time. Now it will be a little different. We have 4 dogs, ages 12, 7, 5, and 3. All have been added at different times, obviously, and still at times have issues between each other, but only when looking for attention from us. Jealousy is a huge issue and it gets better over time. You have to give attention seperately as well as together. But ALWAYS allow the older dog the authority, he/she is the ALPHA dog and you are the ALPHA human. When feeding them or giving them treats, the older always goes first, this clearly establishes the pecking order. Your younger one will learn to accept this and fall in to the correct order.
Hope this helps

I have puppy walked many dogs for guide dogs for the blind and have always had my own dogs as well, it is normal for your older dog to feel left out people come and ohhh and arrrrr at the pup when he use to get all the attention. Give him loads of fuss and play with him when the pups asleep, before long both dogs will be firm friends. The pup will get told off by your older dog but unless it gets really out of hand don't interfere as pup has got to learn social skills and another dog teaching them is the best possible teacher.Don't forget to enjoy your dogs there not young for long and they do some wonderful things when playing so get your camera ready.

your pets most of the times are like your children and children often get jealous when they want more attention. You might try have special time with just you and your older dog so that he understand that the puppy is not taking is place that the puppy is going to make his own place in the home.
