Some people say its a lack of calcium, but according to netdoctor.co.uk:
The white spots on your fingernails are most likely to be caused by a mild zinc deficiency which can be easily corrected by taking a dietary supplement. Zinc is relatively safe and non-toxic so sensible levels of supplementation should do you no harm. I would advise 20-40mg of elemental zinc a day (available from chemists as zinc sulphate). It it may take several weeks before any improvement is seen.

This is usually caused by a lack of calcium. The white line are what gives it away. Other tell tale signs include brittle, peeling of the nail, chipping, splitting, and very flexible nails. Taking a calcium supplement should help this.

It can be a lack of calcium, iron, magnesium. Any number of mineral deficiencies can cause those white marks. Your best bet is go go to the doctor and have some simple blood work done to rule out any deficiencies.
Sometimes they just occur without reason (I have had them since birth with no noticeable deficiencies)
It is always best to consult a doctor.

Hey. Lack of certain minerals in your body can cause a slight elevation in the pigment of skin in your nail beds. Also, I've read that certain poisons over a period of time cause white lines to appear underneath your nails....you'd better investigate.....
