Someone told me to look for hostels, but the cheapest I've seen was $20/night. Please help. Thank you.

No where. $20 a night was a scam. Places will run you at the very least 55 a night and believe me, you dont want to be in those places. You absolutely will not be able to afford anything here for six people for 3 weeks for $1000. Impossible.

the only thing you will find cheaper than $20 a night is Tio Antonio's cardboard hotel and sidewalk cafe.
$1000 works out to be $55.00 per day. that's gonna be tough.
If you can find a motel suite that sleeps six, don't eat out, don't buy Tchotchkes, and rent an economy car, you might be able to do it. but it won't be much fun. try to save up some more money or stay a shorter time.

Um 20 a night is pretty good. You can afford that.

6th St and Los Angeles St in downtown (skid row in a cardboard box or tent). You will not find anything that cheap, even in the ghetto!

$20 is about as cheap as it gets. If you can't afford that, you can't afford to travel. Time to cut the umbilical and get a job, pooch, and stop sponging off your parents. When you do, you'll realize that things cost money.
