My dog digs on the sofa, puts down a chew and then snudges imaginary dirt over it!

This behaviour goes way back in the stone age. When a wolf has his kill and when hes full or wants to save it for later they find a good place to hide it and bury it in the dirt. So when there hungry again or want it they can find it and have it for themselves. Its to prevent other "wolves" from taking it away from them. They do the same for the bowels and pee to not leave there scent behind. its jus basically ancient behavoiur.

Goes back to their primitive instincts. In the wild a kill or source of food would not be able to be eaten in one go, so the dog would bury(hide) it for future consumption. A bit like a squirrel saving nuts to eat during the winter,

Could be many reasons........

But my old dog, Barney, used to bury things that he didn't like!
Especially squeaky toys, can't tell you how many my parents found when it came to digging in the garden.

Perhaps he doesn't like the toast you give him, prefers brown bread, butter instead of margarine, jam and not marmalade, he wants marmite........

Endless possibilities, so I'm afraid I can't really offer a definitive answer.

Basic instincts .... wild canines bury food if they have too much of it so they can come back and eat it another day. Domestic dogs often bury food and toys for this reason.

It could be because when they where wild like wolfs they would bury stuff to keep it safe from scavengers and keep it from rotting it the heat of summer or from freezing in winter.

Goes back to the bit of wild in them , when they used to have to kill and fend for themselves . They would hide the remainder once full for later . Keeps it cool and fresh under the soil .
