If you want to get an SLR without spending quite as much money, get the Rebel XT, which is "almost as good" as the XTi.

That color accent feature is a gimmick used in a few P&S cameras, but you won't ever find that in an SLR. It's easy enough to do with Photoshop or similar software, though, so buy the XT and then come back and ask how to accent a color or two and we'll tell you how.

I have a Canon Elph SD700IS, and it is amazing. I gave away my SLR because this little Canon is better. And it is so small that yo can carry it in your pocket. I'd go with a good Elph or a Powershot. If you're a pro, the Rebel would be great, but otherwise it's too bulky & unnecessary, IMHO.
Good Luck.

I have a Canon A520. Although only 4 megapixels, it takes great pictures and has nice automatic modes including B&W. Truthfully you're better off shooting in color and correcting in Photoshop then changing to B&W. You get more info into the picture that way.
