There is no one best shampoo for dogs, just like people, they require different types. Consult a groomer as to the best shampoo for your dog.

Did you do your research? Some dogs are smellier than others. For instance, my Westie gets a bath every four days and frequently smells stinky and my Jack Russell gets a bath like once every six weeks or so and he rarely smells stinky.
Siberians don't stink, but poodles do... etc, etc...
Often times it's not a good idea to bathe a dog frequently because it will dry their skin out. If you are going to bathe the dogs once a month or more, buy the gentlest shampoo you can find. Any brand should be fine. Also, I would get some kind of doggie conditioner so their skin doesn't dry out. This will be especially problematic if you have a terrier.
There are also sprays you can buy that make the dog smell better, I recommend these. Brushing frequently will help most of all, though. If you brush the dog every night you shouldn't have to bathe it very often.
Also remember that high quality food will keep their coats from being stinky as will plenty of exercise and fresh air.
good luck. Chances are that only the place where the dog sleeps will end up smelling like a doggie.

hi I'm 18 and a dog groomer i get asked this question all the time always use a shampoo made for dogs as human shampoo can dry out the dogs skin and causes problem as for the smell of dog we use lemon dog shampoo on dogs with a strong pong and wash the dog twice as the first wash loosens dirt and the second removes the dirt and eliminates the smell, but unfortunately the smell can never be fully removed and some dogs are more smelly than others like some people I'm afraid good luck and have fun lol

Really any dog shampoo will help with the smell. What you want to look for is something that will help maintain the dogs skin and hair. You don't want to try it out while keeping it shiny and helping reduce shedding. I would suggest going to a pet store to purchase shampoo rather than a store like WalMart. Also, how often you wash your dog is important - especially if the dog goes inside and outside a lot. We give our dog a bath once a week and brush him twice a week. I forget the name of the shampoo we use, but we got it at our local pet store and it smells really good. They also have dog perfume you can spray on the dog after the bath (we also do that).

It's important to make sure you use a dog shampoo, people shampoo is too harsh for their skin. It also depends upon the breed of dog.Basset hounds have anal glands that can be surgically removed. They have oily skin and that brings out their doggie aroma. Also, their long ears can get bacteria in them and that will smell.
Follow the directions on the bottle. Make sure your dog doesn't roll in offensive things in your yard,or at the park.Dogs just love to roll in skanky smelling things. To them it's Chanel #5. Not all dogs smell. It depends on how much time you,the owner, put into grooming them.
Congratulations on becoming a pet parent. As much as it's your son's dog,you will be the ultimate caretaker. The vet bills, license, food, grooming. It's a long commitment, but the rewards are many. There's nothing like the wonderful feeling of being greeted by your pup when you come home.It won't matter if it's been 5 minutes or 5 hours...your dog will be just as excited to see you!Good luck and have fun!

Firstly, you do not want to over bathe a dog as this can cause all sorts of skin problems. The frequency of baths depends on the breed and how dirty they get. Look for a shampoo designed for dogs as human shampoos strip the dogs coat of vital oils and preferably with no added scents. Oatmeal shampoos are easy on the coat. If the dog needs minor clean ups in between baths try using unscented baby wipes or plain water. Good luck.....it helps to keep the ears clean too as they are often a source of bad smells in dogs.

There are different dog shampoos for different purposes. There are shampoos for white dogs, black dogs etc. There are shampoos for dry skin, hypoallergenic, fleas, etc.
Spend some time at the pet store, read the labels and try to determine which shampoo might best suit your needs. As for which brand is best ... I believe they're all very similar, so consider the cost as well as the type of shampoo you need prior to your purchase.
By the way ... larger containers of shampoo (although expensive) are more economical in the long run.

i use "oh my dog !" shampoos and perfume. they sell it at saks, bergdorfs and other high end stores like that, but the stuff you get at petsmart will be just as good ( i just like the scent of my stuff better) i would recommend bathing at least monthly. ( i have a chihuahua) i bathe her monthly, and use the perfume/ spray in between to freshen her up, and she never smells like dog, even when she goes swimming. also if you don't like the dog smell, watch your dog closely when they go outside, because they will try to roll in anything that will make them smell gross ( it's a biological thing, survival of the fittest, everyone is drawn to a sweet smelling animal, while the dirty one kind of fits into the pack and is camoflauged so to speak)

I use on my girls Therapet hypoallergenic shampoo.
You don't want to give your dog a bath more then 3 time a month. Their skin will dry up and they will start scratching badly if you do.

I was recommended Aveeno Body Wash (a humans prodcuct) by my dogs vet. It keeps his skin from drying out, leaves a shiny coat, and yes, smells good too.
