My neighbor has a 24 foor flag pole, with a six foot flag. He is fat, laszy, religious, knows nothing of the world and thinks Bush is great. The US is carved out of the bloody hives of innocent natives, chiseld out of the bones of desperate slaves and build upon the sweat of Asian Laborers by power hungry, white Europeans, who won the land, eliminating the native population with their deseases. What is there to be proud of? Ignorance?

Not everyone is proud of what America is doing right now or has done in the past, but we are almost all patriotic and love our country. There are few countries that have no skeletons in their closet.

I am Not an American so i can say that every country in the world will have a percentage of idiots in them. This does not mean that the entire population of the country is bad merely some of them. I also have to say that nearly every western country has in some way benefitted by the oppresion and destruction of other peoples, an example would be the British Empire and what it did in India. It is not a bad thing to be proud of your country, it is stupid however to believe that your country is in some way better than anyone elses, this is how wars start. A final thought in response to some of the individuals who answered America did not save Europe from Fascism, they were part of the war but in WW2 it was the russians who ultimately done the most to win the war, as for Korea, that was a United Nations Action.

I believe every country has some things to be ashamed of in their past. And America is no different. Look at any European countries history or any countries history for that matter and you will examples of people taking advantages of other peoples. What happened to the native Americans was horrible. But they are getting back at us with their casinos. That is the American way.

However America has done many great things in the history of the world also. We have spent billions of dollars helping those less fortunate in other countries throughout the the world. No one gives more monetary aid than the US. We have freed Europe from the grips of fascism during world war 2. We have freed Korea from communist dictators.

I guess you have to search yourself for something to be proud of. if you want to dwell on the negatives things done hundreds of years ago, then that is you decision. However, we are a great nation that is full of great people. We have freedoms and liberties here that no other country has in the world. I certainly am proud and happy to be an American.

America has made mistakes in the past and has made mistakes recently. However the good we have brought to the world far outweighs the negative we have brought. I believe your problem is more with your neighbor and the past than with America. At least that is what it sounds like to me. Try and find the positives.

What about our efforts to save Europe during two world wars? What about our endeavors to improve humanity's knowledge of our world and universe through NASA? What about our people's donations to charitable organizations throughout the world? You pointed out all the bad and none of the good. And many countries today have been founded on the conquest of it's native peoples.

By the way, if Europeans came over here with just trade in mind, the natives would still have died from their deseases, leaving vast lands empty for settlement. Also, all immigrant groups were exploited, not just the Asians. This includes the Irish, Italians and Polish just to name a few.

Are you basing your opinion of Americans solely on your neighbor? Seems very bigoted to me.

I can't stand Bush, nor do I have a flag, but I'm one of those Native people you were talking about. We weren't "eliminated," or else I wouldn't be here today. The word you're looking for in this case is decimated (greatly reduced in number.) Regardless, there are more of us than you seem to think.

It does hit me as being funny (odd) when the people who are so proud to be American aren't of Native ancestry though. What hits me as even stranger is how much the descendents of immigrants hate new immigrants. If someone can explain this to me, I'd be glad to listen because it's the weirdest thing.

All that you say is true. It is also true in Germany, where I lived for three years, and in Japan, where I lived for two and a half years. I have traveled extensively in Mexico and encountered the same attitudes there.
The man you speak of is an extremist. He does not represent all Americans - you are the proof of that. Every nation has its extremists - even those Nations within ours - the "Indian" nations - I grew up on the Hopi and Navajo nations - and the extremists, while not truly representing the whole of their nation, are the ones who attract much media attention and manage, invariably, to make complete and utter fools of themselves. Your only recourse, and the only one really necessary, is that when someone points out the rant of your extremist neighbor, is to calmly remind them of what I've just told you - he does not represent you, but only himself.

Well that's not very nice. Yeah I'll admit some americans are like that but not all of us. And you can talk smack about our origins but if you're european then you and I have the same origins. Just because my ancestors came here and yours stayed there doesn't mean that we're any different. I'm sure some of your ancestors immigrated here and I'm sure some of mine stayed there- so why you gotta hate on us? It was immigrants from Europe that came here and killed the natives..... Think about it.

Well, there certainly is a lot of bad, but there is some good stuff too. It's not so much about the terrible things that happened in the past but the good things today. I certainly acknowledge that we are doing some crappy stuff right now (i.e. the war in Iraq, Patriot Act, etc.) but we still have a lot of freedom and lots of people love living here.

I have a flagpole, not so grand tho. I am so grateful to be lucky to have been born in America, I love my country!

Every country has bad times, bad people, and bad choices from time to time. Americans, the common , are the most generous, caring people and would share their last with someone who was needy.

we aren't all like that....and it's hides, not hives.

are you proud of your countries history? I daresay that it's as bloody and shamefull as ours. but most of our hearts are in the right place, and most of us are not fat and lazy...we are hard workers, and proud of the fact that we are free, and wish nothing more than that for others. our leaders have gone about it all wrong, and most of us will admit that. grow up and quit generalizing.
