The Catholic Church does not use Holy Scripture as the only basis of doctrine. It could not. The early Catholic church existed before and during the time that the New Testament was written (by Catholics).
There were hundreds of Christian writings during the first and second centuries. Which New Testament writings would become official was not fully decided until about 400 AD.
Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit was guiding the early church (and is guiding the church today) to make the correct choices about things like:
+ The Holy Trinity (which is also only hinted at in the Bible)
+ Going to church on Sunday instead of Saturday (which is actually directly against one of the Ten Commandments)
+ The Communion of Saints
+ Which writings include in the New Testament?
Things that are even more modern like
+ Slavery is bad. Slavery is never declared evil in the Bible. This was one of the justifications for slavery in the Confederate States.
+ Democracy is good. The Bible states that either God should be the leader of the nation like Israel before the kings or kings should be the leader, "Give to Caesar that which is Caesar's." This was talked about a lot during the American Revolution.
This second source of doctrine is called Apostolic Tradition.
Do Christians who do not allow the continuing guiding force of the Holy Spirit to make their beliefs more and more perfect, still endorse slavery as Colossians 3:22 commands, "Slaves, obey your human masters in everything"?
With love in Christ.

A number of ideas have been made up AND become popular.
The trinity is one.
Hell-fire is another.
Immortal soul ....still another.
Purgatory and Limbo .......crazy, unfounded stuff.
However, as 'priests' invented (or borrowed) these ideas, they were placing themselves further and further away from Christianity.
Those priests, with their erroneous ideas became Christendom.
Please do not confuse Christianity with christendom.
There are no inconsistencies in the Bible.
There are a few passages a bit difficult to understand on first reading, but that only means they are difficult, not inconsistent.

Pastor Billy says: hmmm perhaps no one has told you Jesus Christ is a priest. Christianity professes Jesus to be the high Priest of the New Covenant Church.
Biblical inconsistencies? You must mean interpreting traditions which have inconsistencies. Thankfully I don't have that problem as my interpreting tradition doesn't take the bible out of context and I'm aware the bible is not as easy as TV evangelists claim it is to understand without deeper knowledge or expert support of a teaching authority on language, culture, anthropology, philosophy, theology, linguistics, history, sociology etc...

Everything in all religions was concocted by priests and has no relationship to Reality. I have a book Billy Graham sent me when we corresponded years ago that tries to explain some of the many inconsistencies in the Bible. This does not sound convincing. The authors are not objective. They assume there is no inconsistency at all and try to manipulate everything to support that bias. The proper way is to form your opinion after looking critically and objectively at the evidence.

In his book, The Bible and Archaeology, Sir Frederic G. Kenyon, former director and principal librarian of the British Museum, stated about the New Testament, "The interval, then, between the dates of original composition and the earliest extant evidence becomes so small as to be in fact negligible, and the last foundation for any doubt that the Scriptures have come down to us substantially as they were written has now been removed. Both the authenticity and the general integrity of the books of the New Testament may be regarded as finally established."{8}
To be skeptical of the 27 documents in the New Testament, and to say they are unreliable is to allow all of classical antiquity to slip into obscurity, for no documents of the ancient period are as well attested bibliographically as these in the New Testament.
B. F. Westcott and F.J.A. Hort, the creators of The New Testament in Original Greek, also commented: "If comparative trivialities such as changes of order, the insertion or omission of the article with proper names, and the like are set aside, the works in our opinion still subject to doubt can hardly mount to more than a thousandth part of the whole New Testament."{9} In other words, the small changes and variations in manuscripts change no major doctrine: they do not affect Christianity in the least. The message is the same with or without the variations. We have the Word of God.

There was a special on St. Helena yesterday that pretty much said that a lot of the reason there are multiple worship sites for Christians is due to her decree ordering this.

True study of the Bible reveals that so-called inconsistencies are really the result of human misunderstanding, not problems with the text.
As to priest making up things, I believe that was the real cause of the Protestant Reformation.

Christianity = Disciple Misunderstanding + Roman Fusion + Priest Edits + Mistakes
If we just refine each down to its first letter.... then I can safely say.....
..... Don't know.
Before we can tell you what P is numerically, C, D, R and M would have to be defined first.

I assume you mean church related traditions and rituals. Yes, alot are made up. That's why it is important to know your Bible for proof and validation.
