I got my maltese about three months ago, hes great!! I love him to death! But im having some problems potty training him. He knows where to go and he know if he goes in the house hes in trouble. But he still has an accident atleast once a day in the house. I think i have tried everything!! Also another thing he does is he goes right in front of the door. I have taken him in the yard and let him go but then when i let him out and im not outside with him he goes right on the porch. Other than this he's a great dog and im so happy to have him. Someone please help and give me some good tips on my maltese.

You'll need to get an enzymatic cleaner to clean the areas where he's not supposed to go. Urine Gone is a good one. The enzymes will prevent your dog from being able to smell the leftover urine etc in that spot.
Get a crate for your dog. He needs to be in there when you can't watch him with 100% of your attention. That way, you can control his walks and prevent him from making mistakes. Bring amazing treats with you (diced chicken or turkey, cheese) and reward him a bunch for going in the right places. The key to successful potty training is consistency, NOT punishment! Be kind to your dog and be fair. I'm glad you're having fun with your dog!

I am afraid I am going to rain on your parade. Just a little . I have had a Maltese for 18 years so nobody can say I did not love her . She died of old age a month ago, literally, but to the day she passed she did it exactly what you described . I tried everything under the sun. ( But do not spank him, it will do no good and make it worse.); they are very stubborn creatures. Very smart and know exactly what you want. I know I am of no help to you .Just want to tell 'ya that's the way the cookie crumbles.LOL
I hope you will keep trying. Do be loving and patient. I am still crying when I think of her, housebroken or not I would not give it up for the world she was so sweet and loving .

Go to the pet store and get a litter box and doggy litter. Also get some puppy housebreaking aid. I have a chihuahua and litter boxes are wondreful for the smaller breed dogs. Put litter in the box, squirt some of the aid on the litter and put the box in front of the door where he always uses the potty. This is a good way for him to learn, that way if you are not home and he really has to go he has the box! Hope this helps! Good luck!

If he's going right in front of the door, it sounds like maybe you're not getting to him in time to let him out. When you're housetraining a puppy, you have to go out with them. You tell them "go pee" and give them lots and lots of praise the second they do, then come right back in. Otherwise, how are they to know when they're doing the right thing?

If he's still having accidents in the house, you need to make sure you first of all get all traces of the smell out or you can't stop him from going back there (nothing with ammonia). Then, while you're re-training a bit, keep him in the room with you so you don't miss his signals.

You might try sprinkling chili powder down where you don't want him to go. It doesn't have to be thick, just a little will do. Because of the smell he will go else where. The other thing is to just keep working with him, he will get it, it just might take him some time.

At 6 months he's still a baby.
Keep doing what you're doing (perhaps you need to take him out more frequently) and he'll be fine soon enough. At his age, he might not be able to hold it in very long. That'll change soon enough. Patience is key.
