I'm a non-English speaker and chirstian(protestant).
A few months ago, I saw an American protestant church on Korean TV.
They were parying for Israel and even bowed to the Israel flag.
Thay said the reason they do that
is one day Jesus will come to Israel again.
I was shocked to see them.
It looks like that they took the the new Jerusalem for the old Jerusalem on planet Earth.
[I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. Revelation 21:2]
But I think the new Jerusalem never means Israel.
Because Israel is now full of wars and suffers.
I wonder if any other American protestants believe Jesus will come to Israel on the planet earth and they respect Israel.

There are those who believe that Christians are the new Jerusalem.
You saw it in Korean TV, you must understand the culture.
Koreans bow to national flags they did it when I was there.
The New Jerusalem is the new creation of God, containing His family.
The translation for the word Israel.
We respect the Jews because they are part of God's family. They have the covenant. God will never break it.
When we have all come in, the gentiles, that is. God will the turn to the Jews and keep His covenant with them.
Rom 11:25 For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery, lest you be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the foulness of the Gentiles has come in;
Rom 11:26 and thus all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB."
All Israel---all God's family.

OK, your question is going several directions, so let me put a little perspective on it.
I am part of a non-denominational church that prays for the peace of Jerusalem, and for God's chosen people-the Jews.
We do not worship their flag, nor do we pray towards it. We pray to the Lord of lords.
We support Israel any way we can, and currently, the evangelical church is seen by Israel as being her only friend during thick and thin.
What Israel is suffering is part of the last days scenario, and it is going to get worse. However, there is a Messiah, Yeshua, who will come at the last hour and save Israel from her enemies. It is then that Israel will see Him and believe.
New Jerusalem will come at the end of the seven year tribulation. The entire timeline of prophesied events is explained in my link below.

Many American protestants who believe that Revelations is the literal truth do believe that the new Jerusalem will be located where the old Jerusalem is.
The believe that the final battle of Armageddon will take place on or around Mount Megiddo which is why the wars in the Middle East make sense in their theology.
It is sad that the drug induced ravings of a mad hermit form such a large part of their delusions.

I am not Protestant, but I can assure you the Jerusalem in Israel has absolutely no special signifigance to God anymore.
It just another place.
