I have to move in a couple of months to a place where I can not bring my dog that I have raised since 6 weeks old. This is tearing me apart. I love my dog, she is a member of my family. I want to find a nice, loving home for her, but do not know how to go about it. This is really, really difficult...she is a 4 year old Chinese Shar-Pei...she's beautiful.

If anyone can suggest anything helpful on this, I would appreciate it greatly. I am at my wit's end...I am all she knows. Please help.

Okay-- thanks to all the people who are offering meaningful, helpful suggestions.

For those of you here to bash me about what kind of pet owner I am...how DARE you?? You have no idea how awesome a pet owner I am! And I resent your accusations...you have NO IDEA what constraints I am under...so give me a break. I am trying to find the most humane and friendly option available to me. It KILLS me to even THINK about being without her!!!!

You know...some of you people are seriously self -righteous and have way, way too much time on your hands. I would love to see the day, where one of you people are forced to do something that you can not control, and I hope that there is someone there to get on their soapbox, and wag their finger at you!

It sucks for dog owners these days. Most owners, especially of well-bred, showdog quality animals, take care of every aspect of their pets. And yet having a dog is still about as bad as being a crackfiend when it comes to securing an apartment.

HELLO!!! I'M GIVING YOU A SECURITY DEPOSIT!! Even if my puppy did make a poop on your rug, you can take it out of my deposit!

And again, I could understand if your dog was a scraggly stray, but a dog like that -has- to be well-cared for and looked after. I just don't get why people make it so hard.

I have to move also and I will live in my car and a tent before I get rid of animals for my own benefit. You got this dog and it is your responsibility to keep caring for it. Do you have kids? Will you get rid of them if there are no children allowed? You should be ashamed. Especially with one dog. You can find a place if you look hard enough.Take a look at what I move with every time I have too.5 dogs-5 cats-5birds-1horse-1donkey and an aquarium. I have found three homes with these animals. You just need to put time into looking and live up to being a responsible pet owner. After reading the other answers I just had to say, good for you Rachel, its refreshing to see there are people who really do take pet ownership seriously. In 1987 I lived in my car for a month with aniamals and three kids.No one HAS to give up a pet to move.

I agree with the above posters that it is pretty cruel to get rid of your pet just because you are moving. I have 1 cat and 1 dog and that is all I need. I would never take in another animal unless I knew that I would be in it for the long haul.

I am a member of a freecycle group in our area, and as our soldiers are deploying to Iraq, more and more animals are posted on the site, seems like daily. While I am glad that there are caring people out there that want to take in an animal that cant be cared for otherwise, it makes me so sad that just because one "parent" wont be in the home for a year that the animal just gets discarded. Our pets are FAMILY and I would just never be able to do that. I would say you probably shouldnt have taken on the responsibility of a pet if you werent prepared to keep it forever. There isnt a place I would move to that didnt allow me to take my furry friends with me.

:-(

this is a very tough decision; like your best friend dying. Do NOT take this in lightly.

i just love it when dogs look at you. They're so cute!

is there not any way you can keep your dog? Can't you move somewhere where they will let you keep her? If you tell them that she is well behaved and doesn't chew/bite anything, they may just let her stay.

i'm so sorry. If you do HAVE to find a new home for her, starting from now give her all of the love and attention you can give her and let her know how much you love her. Walk with her for longer walks, and make her never forget you. I know you will never forget her.

Take pictures of her and keep them. If she is going to someone else, ask if you can have that persons phone number/address so you can keep in contact with them and see how she is settling in. Ask if you can still spend time with her.

Why not ask a close relative/friend to keep her? You know that person very well and should be able to trust them. You could even walk and play with her still!

I'm so sorry you have to seperate from her. It's making me almost cry just to see her with her cute doggy eyes looking at you while you hand her lead over to someone else. Good luck.

Always make sure you keep in touch with the person you are giving her to as you can make sure they are taking good care of her and not neglecting her.

so sorry

I am not trying to be mean so please do not take it that way...But,

Why the heck are you getting rid of your dog??? Did you not think about that when you were looking for a new place? Jeeze, if you love her as much as you say you do, then you wouldn't be doing this. Poor thing! She will now have to go to a new home, and be so scared and sad because she would miss you terribly. She would end up running away because she wants you and trying to find you and get lost, and end up in a shelter to be put to sleep. Do her a BIG favor and find another place that allows dogs! If you love her so much and it just breaks your heart to get rid of her than don't do it. It will hurt her just as much as it hurts you. Either that, talk to your landlord first and try to work out a deal to be able to keep her. Let them meet the dog and show them that she is well-behaved and will not cause any noise. If the landlord still refuses, then refuse the new place and find somewhere else. Just please, do it for yourself and the dog and don't get rid of her!

You will have to advertise. Maybe you can go to the dog shows and talk to the owners. Maybe, they know people who breed dogs for a living. You can also list it in the newspaper and on the Internet. I hope this helps.

you could try checking with local vets, breeders, and rescue agencies. If I were you though, i would find somewhere else to live. Stay in a hotel until you can find appropriate housing. I would live out of my car until i found a place that accepts my dog, but that's just me. ( i have a 2 year old chihuahua, and she is my baby)

i would suggest contacting a shar-pei rescue. because they aren't a very commonly seen breed, there should be rescues for them. rescues screen potential owners very carefully in most cases, and that way you would find someone familiar with the breed to giver her a new home. good luck.

I would place a classified add in the local newspaper. If you offer the pet for free, you should have no problem finding a home for it.
