Parents - do you believe in spanking for discipline? Were you spanked when you were growing up?

when i was growing up if i did a little thing wrong then i would get a timeout but most the time if i was going to be naughtey i would be NAUGHTEY. so i would get smacked and so would my brother with a hand slipper or wooden spoon. i can remember getting spanked over my mothers knee with a wooden spoon when i was 5 for doing somthing very naughtey and blaming my brother but then some how i got fond out and punished more for lying

my youngest 2 girls are aged 3 an 5 get spanked if the behaviour is very bad or if timeout doesnt work but it is out of love

by spanking i dont mean beating giving or getting a spank on the bottem or a smack onhe bottemis the same thing so dont be getting wrong idea

Well when me and my brother where kids we got smacked not beaten just smacked on the bottem.And the best way to get me inline was to smack meon a bair bottem.
I remeber when my parents started spanking.it was when i was at my grandmas house with my mum and i was rude to her and my grandma took my hand and took me to the kitchen and took out a wooden spoon nelt down removed my skirt and pants and said if your mother spoke tome the way you did this is what she would have got...then she took me up to my mums old room and made me sit on the chair witch my mum used to have to sit on. i never misbehaved when she was around again i tell you. my kids get a smack bum as a last resort through love.

I believe in spanking for discipline. Yes, I was spanked as a child; for pretty much everything. Culture has changed nowadays about spankings. I don't spank with my hand, I use a little grade school ruler, which is very flimsy. It's not the actual hit that bothers my children, it's the fact that I had to actually take it to that level to actually spank them. I try not to spank often - like many have said, "the look" usually works. I give time outs mostly, but when they go overboard, they do get a spank on the bottom only.

Difficult one in these PC times! Smack on the ar se never hurt anyone, indeed most Tory MPs still insist upon it in their leisure time.I don't agree with hitting a child with an object,belt stick etc.Look at nature, when for example a lioness,has had enough of a naughty club. She will give it a swipe.Teenage kids know they can be rude, and ignorant,to adults teacher,and the police. The best thing you can do is lock then in a empty room for a day or so, keep doing it till they learn,not to sure how we stand legally,but you will not find one disrespectful hoddie around the village in Cad estates.

Well I try other things before I spank but I do spank every now and a then. I would say my boys get spanked on average 3-4 times a year. Although my 9 year old got a swat yesterday cause I caught him climbing out his 2nd story window and playing on the roof. Believe me it wasn't the first time he had been told not to do it!!

Yes, we do use spanking, but only for certain things that usually involve dishonesty.

I was spanked growing up. I also felt a wooden spoon touching by bare behind - not a nice moment in life. I tell my girls that they are lucky as they have not ever felt the spoon. It changes one's behaviour for sure.

i got smacked on the bottem when i was younger ouch
or when i kept running of the naughtey step i got a smack on the hand then i would start to wimper and told 'see its not funny is it, if you get up again you will get a good smack on the bottem' and as you would guess my bum stayed on there for the rest of the time out lol

im only 14 so i havent got kids but at the moment i think when i do have kids if they need a smack they will get one.

i find it funny thinking about some of my smacks and why i got them so it oviously hasnt done me any harm though im sure i didnt find it funny at the time lol
i also felt the wooden spoon on my bear butt it hurts i remeber but thats what you get for calling your brother a bit*h hay

I disagree with spanking because you are physically hurting your child. In cases where the child is under age 3, a light spank on the hand is OK. When a child reaches age 3, find other means of discipline such as taking away something he or she values such as T.V. or playing outside. It works for my children.

Spanking your child teaches them to hit others when they are angry. It is also the door opener to child abuse as a parent may hit the child severely out of anger and not realize how much pain the child is experiencing. It is wrong to hurt your child. Use time outs or take away a privilege of theirs instead.

Yes, I was spanked as a means of discipline when growing up. My father used the belt. I hated it and still remember the fear. I don't want my children to fear me. I want them to love me.

i was spanked when i was little and it didn't do me any harm. my daughter is nearly 5 now and i spank her, but only if she ignores the three warnings i give her first. normally now just the warnings are enough, and she knows that if she gets a smack she has pushed it too far. i think there is a massive difference between smacking your child for being naughty and beating children, and it should only be a last resort.

Yes i believe in spanking. A definition of a spanking is - a swat on the bottom to change undesired behavior. A spanking is fine.... It does not SCAR a child.

I was BEAT as a child for every little thing. I would never abuse my children, or call them bad names like mine did me. Even though I dont agree with how my parents ( mostly my mom) handled it, I have never been in trouble with the law, and I work, and take care of my children. So it didn't kill me.
Its just not how i chose to raise my kids.

I have only spanked my kids a hand full of times. I usually dont have to take it to that level. They mind me because they know I expect and demand it.

I believe in spanking as the last resort. Sometimes timeouts and taking away things don't work. That's when spanking comes in. It should be done lovingly and not out of anger.
Yes, I was spanked when growing up but not often. I learned very soon in life to walk the straight and narrow because of fear of my Dad's belt!
