nope, rather the population density and such.
pople living in urban areas are much more likely to be liberal, because they live in such a diverse society, hence, they must accept other peopel's cultures, and so forth. so a lot of people inthese urban areas (along the coasts and all) aren't religious(or at least fundementalist.)
go to kansas on the other hand.. it's rural, there is't any major diversity, and the culture hasn't shifted too much.. so church still plays an important role.
there are becomming a lot of people like me though.. very liberal people, who are also religious ( not fundementalist though.)

You're right to a point. I'm an atheist in the bible belt. And I think there may be one other atheist in the whole state...well at least one who admits being atheist anyway. There's a church on every corner here.
As an aside, I think the inbred jokes above are out of line. There's no reason to insult people like that. It's childish.

They are having to concentrate, band together in their silliness to create their own communities where their crazy ideas are acceptable. They move inland because there is lots of empty, secluded space where they can live in isolation.
Perhaps I will move to the beach.
