My problem is similar but opposite, I don't have enough closets to hold my clothes. My solutions is to use plastic clothing bags to hold out of season clothes under my bed. I also use hangers that hold more than one item top to bottom. I have a skirt hanger that holds 6 skirts and takes no more room than one skirt would. Hang only necessary items. Never hang sweaters, or play wear.

You need to get rid of anything that you have not touched or wore in over a year. Try to remember that it's just clothes and there shouldn't be a big emotional attachment.

After clean out the bulk. You should add another bar in your closet at a lower level. Lowe's has great closet organizers that you can build yourself.

I was able to fit inexpensive bookshelves in the bottoms of my closets. This is a great place for sweaters and other knits. Some of my out of season clothes are stored in bags on the top shelf of the closet. I keep the remainder in large plastic tubs and cover them with fabric. It protects my clothes and serves as a side table.

Aside from donating as someone else said, there is a way to make the most use of the space you have; groups...group all shirts/blouses together, all jackets from suits, all slacks, all skirts, etc. you will then have much more leeway to mix and match outfits....so a certain jacket, say, when separated from its 'mate' becomes the jacket for another skirt or slacks, etc. etc...didnt answer your question exactly, huh? but it popped into my head and I thought I'd pass it along......but getting rid of anything you have not worn in one year is always a good place to start!! good luck!!
