If it is a first name of a person, it can be of any nationality. A name is what a person would like to be called. It can be said and spelled in any manner the person wishes.

Or do you mean the origin of the name?

Perhaps from the Greek place name Ionia. Ionia was a region on the west coast of Asia Minor.

cf. English name Ione from same source.

The way you have it spelled makes me think it is Polynesian. If it were spelled like mine , Lonnie, it would perhaps be of German origin.
