when you are taking antibiotics when you have the test. I noticed a sign in the clinic saying that you should state if you are on antibiotics when you have your blood test for the above done. My sister had the blood test and it came back negative but she takes antibiotics for urinary tract infections regularly and is now worried that these may have affected the testing. We weren't asked this question by the nurse or health advisor when she took the test. She has contacted NHS Direct and are waiting for somebody to get back to us - in the meantime does anybody know if she may have to take the test again?

Antibiotics have no effect on the outcomes of an HIV test.
But its possible that hey might influence the chances of a false positive result because the test is extremely sensitive. Up to 99.8% sensitivity. Therefore it might be possible to influence the test to be reactive (Positive).

Its hard though to influence a false negative result because of the high sensitivity of the test.
So if your Sister's results were negative then i would say she is HIV negative.

She can take another test if she is stillin doubt.

I would take the test again just to be on the safe side for myself and my partner, but thats me. You are just going to have to ask someone from that profession.
