god do some people have no sence and read things properly. if the child was walking home on its own how on earth would this person know the behaviour?!!! jesssus people really amaze me these days!
i have problems with my 4yr old son and schools only down the road its a nightmare! as suggested you could get a bike or a scooter- even a set of roller skates that go over shoes.
i try and talk to my son about whats going on around us and what can he see etc. or will say to him before we leave - right lets see how many red cars we can see etc.
also have a sticker chart at home which he will get a sticker as soon as walking through the door. it is along way for little legs but sadly if you dont drive it can be extreemly hard which some people fail to realise!
good luck

You could talk about what you guys are going to do once she gets home.... watch her favorite show, read a book together, or some other activity. A mile can be a long way for a 4 yr old who just got done with a busy day of school... so the crankiness is understandable.

I think that making your daughter walk a mile home is way too far. Can't you get the bus or drive? I'm not surprised she shouts and cries. I would too if someone made me walk all that way after a long and busy day!

My little girls had a mile walk to her school, when she was in p1, and she was only tiny, the avarage height of a 2.5 year old, but she soon got used to it, ignore her protests, she needs to walk and its good exercise for her. My,little one prefered to take her bike if that is possible for you it might help.
Some people do not have a choice but to make them walk, schools will only provide a service if your 2 miles away, and not everyone lives on a bus route. Whats wrong with walking?

Let her ride piggy back. Get a small bike for her, or as one said make it like a scavenger hunt. Each day make a new list of neat things that can be found on the way home. If she finds all (or most) give her a snack that she PICKS OUT. Just make sure it doesnt spoil her appetite before supper

At first, the beginning of your question shocked me! But then I read the rest. First you need to make sure your daughter goes potty before she is dismissed. She's only 4. That's a long walk for someone her age. If she has a bike, you could bring it along for her to ride. If she's having fun, then she won't remember to complain. But if I had a 4 year old, I wouldn't make her walk that far.

i have the same problem. execpt i have a 5yr old and a 3yr old. get her to go for a wee in school if she cant go thats no problem there not ashamed at that age. you could take a pair of pull ups when you collect her jusst slip them on insted of knickers so she can do her business in there. you could sing songs collect leaves all saughts of distractions when she starts say o my goodness look at that bird or somthing that tends to work. or if you pass a little shop say if you walk like a very good girl you can have somthing from the shop good luck

Every child is different. Try playing games with her to help her take her mind off it, talk to her and even sing a song with her. Reward her for her good behaviour tell her she can have something she likes if she gets to the nxt lamp post ect ect. try and ignore her bad behaviour, I know its hard but children don't care if the attention they get is bad or good just as long as they get it. Praise her for behaving and accumplishing small sections at a time. Eventually she will look forward to your walks instead of acting up. Good Luck xx!!

Get her to use the school toilet before walking home. You may have to enforce this!
just be firm and don't tolerate tantrums.
Get a reward chart up on the kitchen wall and each times she walks home without moaning give her a star and a sweet or treat of your choice.

How about playing eye spy or seeing who can count the most lamp posts or the first to see a cat or a dog etc. I'm lucky that I live 100 yds away from my kids school!!
