the idea of gods started thousands of years ago in the sumer civilization and from there other religions started to form and started to worship other gods and goddess. but the first known worshipping of a deity started well over 25,000 years ago to a goddess known as Venus a female goddess who was of the earth and love. religions spread all over the world and have been around for so long no one really knows when it began or when it will end.

It depends on your beliefs on the situation. According to the Bible God started this whole "God thing" himself. However some people believe that the first people on earth "cavemen" if you will started the beliefs. It just deoends on your stance when it comes to religious beliefs I suppose.
