I don't have a website where I've read the information, but I have read books that have said that the primary source that spread the religions was through trade and commerce. Hinduism was a religion that was practiced throughout India and into SE Asia all the way into Indonesia. Buddhism grew popular for a time within communities that were already Hindu. The main way Buddhism spread, like Hinduism, was through trade and commerce. Also Buddhism set up monasteries and universities throughout many lands and this is also how it spread. Buddhism continued to spread with migrations from SE Asia and Hinduism has also spread with migrations out of India. The same way Jainism and Sikhism have also spread....through migration of people who practice the Dharmic religions into other places and setting up places of worship there where they live and work. Others in this place who, for many reasons, go and learn about the religion sometimes also adopt the religion and began practicing it and sharing it with their friends, family, and others who might ask questions. This is also how Shinto and other religions have also spread....through human interactions such as trade and also, mostly, through migration in the 20th century and now in the 21st century. I live in Oklahoma and we have two Hindu temples, a Jain temple, two Sikh gurdwaras, several Buddhist temples and centers, several mosques, synagogues, and churches as well. I know many people who practice various religions and because of our large Asian population here Buddhism, Shinto, etc are not uncommon religions practiced by them primarily and by nonAsians secondarily (secondarily meaning they are a minority, but they exist). I am a minority in my religion. Most of the Hindus here in Oklahoma are immigrants from India (and several generations thereafter, too). I learned about Hinduism through a satsang that met in my local community. It was primarily nonIndian Hindus who had learned about Hinduism through working with Indian Hindus and by visiting the local temples...of which I also have been to many, many times.

Hinduism was passively spread as merchants traded with countries in Southeast Asia, because we never proselytized, our range of influence wasn't that great. Buddhism spread through most of East Asia mostly through trade and wandering monks who set up new monasteries as they traveled.

Hinduism is a way of life. You are born Hindu you can not convert into it. Buddhism on the other hand you can convert into.
