The dog on the corner barks at anyone and everything. My dog barks as soon as he hears it and he is much louder! We have had complaints from other neighbours about our dog barking but feel its not our fault. We have spoken to owners of the other dog but to no avail. Its driving me nuts!!

Getting dogs to quit barking at people/cars who pass their yard is a tricky one to remedy because the dogs bark at the offensive being, and it goes away... therefore reinforcing their behavior.

The dog needs to learn that barking isn't the behavior that you want to happen so it needs a little desensitization. Although, seeing as how the problem barking starts with the neighbor's dog, it will be tough to stop their barker from triggering your barker.

One thing not to do is to yell at your dog while he’s barking in an attempt to make him stop. The dog will think you’re joining in the fun with your yelling. Then he’ll get excited and bark even more.

Try teaching him “quiet”. Some people swear by teaching a dog to "speak" and then teaching "quiet", although, GSDs aren't really a breed that you want to encourage to speak. The "quiet" command should suffice.

To teach the "Quiet" command you put the dog on leash and stand by him in the yard as something "exciting" stands on the other side of the fence (or otherwise outside the boundries of your property). Then ask to the dog to be "Quiet." When your dog barks, quickly tug the leash and say "No!" "Quiet, good!" Very quickly give him a treat and lots of praise. The dog learns quiet has a high value reward. Repeat until the dog doesn't need a leash correction.

You could offer to help the nieghbor with their dog in teaching the same quiet command or tell them that a tired dog is less troublesome and that he probably needs to get out and walk a bit more... you could even walk together.

Good luck!

First of all...Quit yelling at the dogs. Be calm and assertive and take a spray bottle filled with water out and sit with the dogs. When they start barking you calmly spray them and say No or Leave It. You need to walk your dogs as much as you can to get the energy out of them. Shepherds are very much barkers and it can be controlled. Bark collars are about $100. Obedience training is a must for these dogs.

I've had this problem too and it isn't easy. Firstly don't shout at him, he'll think you're joining in. You need something to interrupt the behaviour then distract him. I used a plastic bottle or a tin can with stones in it to make a loud noise which interrupted the behaviour then move him and distract him with a game or titbit. Mine got used to the noise from the stones so I got a loud whistle to alternate the noise. If there are specific times of day when this dog is outside make sure yours is inside, preferably away from the noise and doing something he enjoys.
Good luck, it's really difficult if the other owners won't co-operate.

Get a Tin can and Put some change in it. Cap it every time the dog barks shake the can at him. This only works if he dosent like the sound.

I think all gsd's are barkers I know mine is, to stop her barking too much I got some training discs, you get a instruction book with them and they worked for me I only have to rattle them now and she stops and comes and sits by my side for a treat. Another way is a fairy liquid bottle full of WATER when she's barking squirt her and say quiet she'll soon stop, always give her praise when she does. You'll find after a few goes you'll only have to show the fairy bottle for her to stop. Good luck

My neighbors dog barks at everything that moves, even a leaf blowing off the tree. It's very annoying, but fortunately they do not leave it out for very long. Here's a site that may help...

When he barks squirt cold water at him, and say NO at the same time, he will get the message very quickly GSD's are very intelligent, you will probably only need to do this a couple of times, Please Do Not use an anti-bark collar, they are downright cruel!!
