I partially--and strongly--agree with fyre_and_reign. It is a bad idea to write details. If you write an apology, just write how you feel. It sounds like you feel very remorseful, so that will come through without using specifics. No one needs (or should be able) to discern the context of what you write except you and the person it's intended for.

why did you do it? i speak from first hand that Love is not something to toy with. it comes so easy the first time. After that trust it broken it is never the same again. if you do tell them do not write a letter, if you truly love them let them know you will not do it again.
show them. but it will take time.
( if a person will do it once they will do it twice)

Don't take the chicken's way out...just say it face to face. You wronged him/her, and should face up to it and all the consequences. Don't make it worse by writing a letter.

My advice,
Be sincere, and bring a lovely rose with a white candle.
Light the candle, and hold it. Then hold the rose in the other hand. And in front of your lover, just say these words: " I LOVE U".
I hope your lover will get the message.
