Drivng through traffic here is a nightmare. You have to leave your car in a garage and take public transportation to get around. If not, your entire budget will be spent on garages. Can't you get to New York on a bus to Port Authority or a train to Penn Station? Bringing a car into Manhattan is a really bad idea.

Driving in NYC is not the easiest thing for someone who's never done it before. Luckily it's not really necessary. Take the train or bus in. Once you are in town, you can take buses, the subway or taxis. A double decker bus tour might be fun, there are also boat tours around Manhattan. You should see a Broadway show, experience Times Square, walk through Central Park, visit the Metropolitan Musuem or Museum of Natural History. Don't forget to go downtown and check out Chinatown, Little Italy and the financial district.

Depending on where your coming from park in a garage and take the Train in or drive into Manhattan and park in a garage and use public transit or just walk. Driving is a nightmare. It'll ruin your trip. Without driving you'll have ablast. Go to Central Park. It's very nice. Take a tour around the city on one of the boats at the piers. That's alot of fun. You can also take a bus tour around the city from Times Square. There's literally so much you could do here. Just make sure your not driving and you'll have a wonderful time. Bring enough money. Prices here are OUTRAGIOUS.

Arrive early and park somewhere (legal), and just take the subway everywhere. Make sure you get a subway map or you can just ask the subway clerk or a police officer is usually around.
From what I hear take those double decker tour buses, they should pretty much cover the big things.
Here is a must, Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty. If you guys like museums, the MET or Natural History would be good. A walk thru central park would be good as well. But at night you have to go to Time Square and see it in it's glory. FULL OF LIGHTS!!!

NYC in the weekend with a car isn't as bad as the weekdays. I drive into NYC every weekend to see my folks.
Having said that though, if I were you, I would probably make a quick drive around the city with your car, then park your car and take the bus or subway to spots you want to visit. I usually park my car in Midtown Manhattan, and the garage I use lets me park my car for $13.00 for 10 hours (which is a great bargain).
How about the Modern Musem of Art? Southstreet Seaport? Observation Tower at Rockefeller Center? Natural History Museum?
If you want to take a tour with your dad, you can take one of those double decker buses that take you around (I think one loop goes uptown, another one goes downtown, another one goes to Brooklyn). Another fun thing to do is to ride the Circle Line Ferry which leaves from a port near Battery Park. Shopping on 5th Avenue, Madison Avenue is always nice too. Take as much money as you can because things are definitely expensive :)
Have fun with your dad and enjoy NYC!

The Indy 500 road race looks like a kid's bicycle race compared to driving in Manhattan. If you drive on First Avenue you will be involved in a grand auto race with every taxi driver from NYC to Bangladesh. Cars swerve in and out of traffic, jaywalkers take chances crossing the street, and traffic lights are fickle. Take a train into Penn Station or a bus into Port Authority. You'll save plenty of headaches. If you haven't seen any of the sites, best place to start is the Empire State Building on Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. If you are trying to save money eat at pizza places and bring about $50 for the day.

The beauty of NYC is that you don't need a car to get around. Buy one of those all day metro card passes for $7 and leave the car (and the worries) outside the city. As for tours and other touristy stuff to do, check out sites like NYCTouristCenter.com.
