Lovingly known as the "SKIDWAY" USS Midway (CV-41) was based at Yokosuka from October 1973 to August 1991. The Skidway hull was based on the design of the Montana class battleship... her list was caused by the post-war addition of her "angled-deck.
I flew out of NAS Atsugi with HSL-43 Det 2C to the USS Mobile Bay which was part of her battlegroup... and flew to the Midway when she had a LOX explosion aboard in mid-1990.
I also flew off the Independence, and was the crew aboard the USS Kitty Hawk on her last cruise prior to going to Yokuska.

On October 5, 1973 USS Midway (CV-41), with CVW-5 and her accompanying task group put into Yokosuka, marking the first forward deployment of a complete carrier task group in a Japanese port. This was the result of an accord arrived at on August 31, 1972 between the U.S. and Japan. In addition to the morale factor of dependents housed along with the crew in a foreign port, the move had strategic significance because it facilitated continuous positioning of three carriers in the Far East at a time when the economic situation demanded the reduction of carriers in the fleet. In August 1991, Midway departed Yokosuka and turned over to USS Independence (CV-62), which was replacing Midway as the forward-deployed carrier in Yokosuka. In August 1998 USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) relieved Independence as the 7th Fleet forward-based carrier.

The only US carrier I can think of stationed in Yokuska is the USS Midway, but she was not built on a battleship hull.
