Hi!
I'd really like to learn Italian. I'd like to do this from home with Cd's and books. I just wondered if anyone had been sucessful in teaching themselves a language from home?
thanks.

i have been teaching myself greek at home for just over one year now...and if you really apply yourself you can learn it!! i now speak with greek people through email and msn and i really enjoy it. i listen to greek conversations from cd's and greek music and because i've applied myself to learning the language so much, i occasionally dream in greek. it is crazy!! im 15...i dont know how old you are but im sure you will do fine!!! GOOD LUCK!!

You can, but I would supplement those books and cds with other forms of Italian media, such as Italian movies and tv shows, music, etc. The downside to learning a language at home using books and cds is that you don't get much of a chance to practice the language in conversation and hear it spoken, that's why the movies and music are helpful.

Ciao!

I would advise this only if you are unable to find a beginners' Italian class ... these days, they are quite hard to find, unless you live near London. In order to learn effectively and acquire a reasonable pronunciation, beginners really need to be taught the basics by someone competent, preferably a native speaker, or failing that, a bilingual speaker. This is because once you start making mistakes with pronunciation and the basics of grammar, they become "fossilised" very quickly and these bad habits are extremely difficult to unlearn later.

Once you have a good grounding in the basics, then you can teach yourself quite effectively, assuming you have access to native speaker audio resources. "Acquerello", for intermediate students, is very good, and you can receive Italian TV by satellite. I have been learning Italian for 10 years and am now bilingual. I use TV to maximise my daily exposure to spoken Italian, and I also attend two classes every week - even advanced students should not go without classes for too long.

In bocca al lupo, buono studio!

Absolutely! Whatever the way you choose, 90% is up to how much you're really motivated! Even the best, more expensive school with "living teacher" (yeah, sometimes teachers can be scarier than zombies :-) can give you poor result, if you're not really interested in learning a language, while if you're devoted or better, you like to learn, CD, DVD, books, software are good and more cheap way to start. I did it myself.
Later, is still up to you becoming fluent by using the idiom as much as you can (*no* teacher can really teach that).

As long as you apply yourself.
I would also recommend that every time you learn a phrase, try it out on someone that speaks the language fluently.
Try to find someone that is from the country of origin of the lanquage if possible.
If that person understands you they'll let you know you got it right.
If you are wrong in your pronunciation or usage, if you come close enough with your pronunciation or use of the word(s) or phrase(s), some will also correct you where necessary.

I myself have not taught myself a language from home, but my brother is learning spanish via cds and books and is doing it very successfully. Personally the best way is to get the basics and work from there, itll be alot easier.

You can learn the very basics that way,but to really speak a foreign language, you have to converse with a native speaker.

Yeah, you could learn the really important phrases and basic phrases needed to survive in another country in 3 months. You have to be really diligent in it though. No procrastinating. :) Tips... get books with assignments in them, make flashcards and memorize words, learn with a friend, get a teacher or tutor to help you. In your free time, don't go on Facebook or Youtube. Go straight to your German textbook. It's a pain, but you've gotta learn. Good luck :D

with a hell of a lot of self discipline... I know of a Chinese guy who learned German at home, all alone, with cassets, books etc and speaks VERY WELL German! I admire that guy because I have never had the discipline to pull it through, though I tried with Russian and other languages before!
