To the religious and spirituality section: Where does much of the world's sorrow come from?
Maude: What kind of flower would you like to be?
Harold: I don't know. One of these, maybe.(points to a huge bed of daisies)
Maude: Why do you say that?
Harold: Because they're all alike.
Maude: Oh, but they're NOT! Look. See, some are smaller; some are
fatter; some grow to the left, some to the right; some even have lost
some petals. All kinds of observable differences! You see, Harold, I
feel that much of the world's sorrow comes from people who are *this*,(points to one daisy)
yet allow themselves to be treated as *that*. (points to the huge bed of daisies)

The metaphor (?) coupled with your query above seems to indicate that an individual who allows itself to be treated like just one of the masses is somehow a source of the world's problem of too much sorrow. I feel that such an analogy leads to blaming the victim, expecting too much from certain individuals and by extension their societies and allowing those who actually deserve the blame for the world's sorrow to go blameless. We are all individuals and it would be wonderful if each could fully grow and express themselves according to their own desires. However, the world is not a utopia and all are not born into equal circumstances. Most of us labor desparately our whole lives to exist daily and help our won beloveds. Too often societies and their individuals are expected by their de facto masters to exist in poverty and misery, to toil endlessly for the 'greater good', to provide for the 'larger prosperity' and neglect their personal interests. The truth is that these de facto masters, both those within and those outside their smaller societies, are the cause and should be blamed for the sorrows of those who are miserable. And those strong enough to not be actually struggling, but who stand by and only observe, deserve some blame also. The world population at large as a humane entity is a failure due largely to the avarice and obstinate neglect of and by the privileged classes, and the 'sorrows' will remain for eons to come unless those people come to their senses. On their feet I lay sorrrow upon sorrow. And, I weep.

Natural inequality of man. Despite wishful thinking and social engineering mankind cannot make every one equal. There will always be rich and poor; have and have-nots; fast and the slow; fat and the thin.
