Do NOT listen to anyones aftercare advice ACCEPT from the guy who did the tattoo. different artists recommend different aftercare techniques but he knows what works best with HIS way of applying the tattoo. If you have any questions, speak to your Artist, not to a bunch of amateurs on the internet.

Fresh Tattoo
Take bandage off in 2 hours
Wash tattoo carefully with warm soapy water
DO NOT SCRUB
Lightly pat the tattoo until dry…
DO NOT RUB
Apply a very thin coat of bacitracin or aquaphor ointment 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days
Although re-bandaging a tattoo is not recommended, if covering the tattoo is necessary a sterile bandage or dressing should be used.
Be sure and wash the tattoo every night and morning…
DO NOT SOAK
Avoid tattoo exposure to direct sunlight and refrain from swimming in fresh, salt or chlorinated water for at least 2 weeks.
After External Healing
Tattoos heal quickly BUT fading can still be a problem
Apply hand lotion once a day until dryness stops
Vaseline Intensive Care, Lubriderm, Nivea, etc...
Tanning fades tattoos
Always cover fully healed tattoo with sun block
DO NOT RUIN YOUR INVESTMENT!!!

Wow......I just had a pretty large piece done 2 days ago (my second) and both of my artists said to keep dressed over night (to keep from sticking to the sheets) and to prevent scabbing. Take bandage off gently rinse in shower rubbing with fingers only, pat dry and start whatever treatment he recommends (I use InkFixx). So no don't rebandage. Go to my profile and looked my 360 page. The dragon pic is at 12 hours and the Frazetta Style Death Dealer tattoo is 20 hours old. No scabs no swelling no redness

With my first tattoo i took off the cling film after few hours, washed it and put vaseline on it then left it open. Once healed it was fine.
With my second though it was a larger one, i did the same and few weks later had to go and get it refilled in as i had blotchy patches - i was told to cover it up after washing it for another 24 hours so i did that with every one i had after and they all turned out fine.
I think it also depends on how your skin reacts to the ink.

You definitely DON'T want to apply neosporin, vaseline, bacetracin, or any antibiotic ointments to your tat!! Those are all salves, which are meant to draw toxins OUT of your body. At this point, the ink is still a toxin. Putting salves on it can cause it to blotch, and you you'll have to have some parts redone. It's okay to use an unscented body lotion, such as Lubriderm a couple of times a day. And don't cover it anymore with anything other than the clothes on your back!

There's really no debate. Tattoos need air to heal properly. Covering them is not a good idea, unless you need to because of contamination issues. Once the original bandage is removed, just apply unscented lotion twice a day until it's healed.

I had one done in February and I was advised to take the initial cover off after an hour. Then keep it as dry as possible for the next few days.
Quiet difficult as it's on my ankle, so had my leg hanging out of the bath!

First, I can't believe that any shops still use cling film...yuck.
Second, you increase your chances of infection if you rebandage. Your tattoo needs air to heal.

It all depends on how they've been done. I like to cover freshly boiled new 'tatoes in a little butter, and maybe some finely chopped chives.
