When you have a single tall building, you don't have a village you have a slum in the making. Studies have proven that when building go above four stories, the social contract breaks down.
It may not be in the builders best interest to build different houses on different lots, with a central business center and local schools, but that's what encourages the pride of ownership and neighborliness that defines man as a social animal. Mixing types of housing, so that elders in 2-bedroom ranches and families in 3- and 4- bedroom colonials are just right for people. That's how you make a village.

the many houses. if the tall building caught fire or something everone would lose everything while if a fire occured in a village of many houses it could be contained and stopped before it got too big. also one big building would just end up like the projects eventually and no one wants to live in the projects.

A single tall building takes up less land space, has a single chimney, uses less fuel to heat or cool, provides jobs to both build it and work in it, pays more taxes to the government, and provides shelter for pedestrians.

I think it depends on what focus you want to take. A tall building takes up less horizontal space, but precludes social interaction.
