Well, first of all, there really aren't very many schools in the US that have attempted to teach intelligent design or creationism. Usually, it's a rogue teacher or a hyper-religious school board that tries to introduce such curricula.
But the main reason you get more controversy about it here in the US is that education policy is not a national issue in the US. It is a state government issue with curricula set by local school boards. So, you have thousands of groups in thousands of areas able to act with some autonomy.
In Europe, they make decisions on a national level.

As an American, we are not lagging behind other countries, We just have enough common sense, to know there is a Creator, & for your information, Most public schools don't even teach creation anymore, Yet they are letting islam teachings in a very small portion of schools be a class credit, When I was in school in the late 1950's to 1968, we honor our flag & said a prayer before class, & not ONE person or parent complained. Now today it is completely different, I can see why now My grandsons drop out of school & went on to get their GED.

Strangely, it has to do with the US founding fathers, who refused to accept a state sponsored religion (establishmentarianism). The US has thus traditionally been a free market for religious ideas, and loopy faiths are constitutionally protected.
Meme theory proposes that those ideas that develop most successfully are not necessarily those that are true, but those that can spread and sustain themselves within a particular environment. The US is a fascinating, if scary, case study.

I don't see what it has to do with OECD but the answer is obviously that evolution is questioned because it conflicts with the predominantly christian population's religious precepts.
Evolution is questioned because there are enough holes left in the theory to still be questioned. There probably always will be. It is still however the most feasible explanation.

Because Christian fundamentalism (as opposed to simply Christianity) is widespread in the United States. Yet even in the United States all the anti-science noise comes from a small but vocal minority.

It has to do with religious fundamentalists controlling segments of the Govt.
Anyone who can deny evolution in the face of such simple and overwhelming evidence is an act of supreme willfull ignorance.
Consider the development of the Fauna of isolated places, such as New Zealand.
BTW - I don't think believing in evolution is equivalant to athiesm.

It shows that education is a major problem in the USA and that , unfortunately there is only a minority of people that can get a proper one. Ignorance and intellectual laziness is what fundies strive upon. Faith is one of the best excuse when one is too lazy to study, experiment, compare, peer review.

Anywhere that you have the Bible around to teach the truth you are going to get opposition to evolution. Who says we are behind everyone else? Look around, we are far ahead of most other nations.

I thought that it was a good thing to be open-minded? To consider and study without fear every theory brought to the table? If evolution is so fragile that it can not take the scrutiny of those who disagree then maybe you should rethink your position?
Also, concensus is not evidence of anything.

Maybe the USA is smarter than the average bear. For sure our Lord is smarter. Evolution is not a proven fact and you can't prove it.
