Maude: What kind of flower would you like to be?
Harold: I don't know. One of these, maybe.(points to a huge bed of daisies)
Maude: Why do you say that?
Harold: Because they're all alike.
Maude: Oh, but they're NOT! Look. See, some are smaller; some are
fatter; some grow to the left, some to the right; some even have lost
some petals. All kinds of observable differences! You see, Harold, I
feel that much of the world's sorrow comes from people who are *this*,(points to one daisy)
yet allow themselves to be treated as *that*. (points to the huge bed of daisies)

I am not sure I understand your question or if you may have been insinuating that organized religion contributes to much of the worlds sorrow, if you were, I would disagree. I don't believe in organized religion but thats just me and as opinionated as I am I know that the world according to me is not necessarily the world at all. Yes, SOME PEOPLE, may represent the religion they belong to, or religion in general in a negative manner but to point a finger at all religion and say that it is bad is just ignorant in the true sence of the word( the root word in ignorant is "ignore" as in ignoring the other more positive side of religion) and you have to do your own heart felt soul searching before you can say one way or the other what and what exactly you believe in. I know there are many people who are religious because that is the way they were raised and they just never decided to question any thing they were taught just as there are people who put down religion for no other reason than to get a rise out of others. In short my religion gives me GREAT comfort because over the years I have had my share of sorrow ( no more or less than anyone else) I have been in situations that I could not find a way out of, I pray and what appeared to be eminant doom simply disappeared. I know the believers who may be reading this right now are all nodding thier heads.I wish this kind of life for everyone but I wouldn't force it or even preach it to anyone, because I took up my own study of religion on my own, I didn't believe the believers or the nonbelievers, I found out everything I believe to be true entirely on my own. And by the way I am the furthest thing in the world from being perfect. So where do I think much of the worlds sorrow comes from, people. people who have the ability to deliberatly hurt someone else and people, religious or other wise who don't have the ability to simply be kind to one and other.Peace

Most of the worlds sorrow comes from the the degradation of society due to several factors;
1. Although in every religion there is only one true rule, do unto others as you would have them do upon you, we are all trying to argue, fight and kill each other over who made the rule up in the first place. Wars, carnage and horror, no matter what they stem from causes sorrow.
2. The suffering of many due to unfair practices by the few. Many leaders of many places abuse their power keeping as much wealth and knowledge for themselves and letting those under their guidance suffer. Much sorrow in the world today stems from oppression.
3. A lack of understanding about how not only to treat each other, but how to treat ourselves. Drugs, addictions, abuse of each other, hatred, jealousy and the list goes on and on. How do we expect to be happy when so many of us go out of our way not only to make others unhappy, but purposefully do self destructive things that make our own spirits dread.
The list can go on but I am sure you already get the idea. Humanity must learn to come together, work together, and get over themselves or not only will the sorrow in the world continue, but it will grow until it is so deep that it is inescapable. This is when events will begin to take place that will cataclysm into the end of what you all call your civilization.
Sorrow can only be undone by the goodness of light within oursleves to be better to each other.

"The mark of your ignorance is the depth of your belief in injustice and tragegy. What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls the butterfly. " - Richard Bach
To explain it a little further, I wud say, while growing up, we learn the rules of nature, And, that makes our life easier to live. e.g. we know that if we don't walk properly, we may fall down. Similarly, if we know the ulimate truth about nature or in other words the truth about our own existence, we'll know this whole nature completely. we will know how to live this life properly and that will get us out of the bonds of worries, sorrows etc.

Very good and true quote. I agree with your first answer, too. Religion and the fact that not everyone is able to accept other's beliefs and like to fight over it is where the world's sorrow comes from.

organic inequality of guy. in spite of wishful thinking and social engineering mankind won't be able to make absolutely everyone equivalent. there'll continually be rich and undesirable; have and have-nots; quickly and the sluggish; fat and the skinny.

It's tooooo long to post here (you'd kill me) but there is a very good answer at http://www.MusingsAboutGod.com
in the article "Everything you need to Know about Life (kinda)"
It's not horribly long, but it's too long to post here. And no one likes a super-long post.
