They're both right. It's not an either-or proposition.

They actually might both be right. Islam has been one of the fastest growing religions for a number of years, to tell the truth. I'm not sure of the numbers post-9/11; I'm sure that changed things, but I'm not sure in which direction.
That said, a lot of Christians are going to church more as a reaction as well. That doesn't strike me as a very difficult thing to have happen - back where I grew up, a lot of folks, despite being nominally Christian, didn't really go to church.
Some people turned to religion for meaning after the attacks, so it's entirely reasonable that two of the larger religions in the US would see an upswing in popularity. There's some 300 million people in the US, that's plenty enough for both statements to be true.

I don't know but I hear alot about the Islam faith. I am a Christian, if we as Christians don't get off of our butts and get busy, then if it's not Islam it will be some other faith that will be taking over and we ain't gonna like it. This country was not founded on Islam or buddah. Our founding fathers did not pray to the east, west etc but to the God above. I won't argue this point as I've been to the archives, I've read what some of our founding fathers wrote and I do know they were believers in the God, our creator and this country needs to not be so lenient on letting anybody or any religion come in and just take over. Satan is very subtle folks - calling all Christians - remember what he talked Eve into - it's the same today and will be the same tomorrow if we don't stand and let it be made known that this country is free YES but God is our leader and NO one else. I am not one to tolerate another religion that wants to take over MY country, where I was born and raised. If I went to Iraq or any other country that worshiped who or whatever, then I would no. One have to learn the language and two worship their god. The first thing required of anyone who enters this country should be to LEARN and SPEAK our language. Sorry off subject but I am hopes that Christianity is the growing faith not Islam.

They can both be right. As most American already consider themselves to be Christians, the number actually attending church can increase without a major chance in the number who are considered Christians.
At the same time, the number of people who are Muslims can increase. Much of that is through immigration, rather then conversion. So the number of Chrisitans is not reduced but the addition of new people who are Muslim. Also many come from the non-Christian part of the American population.

Actually, they both could be right. So many people had turned away from any kind of organized religion. Now they have gone back to it. Both Islam and Christianity, I think.

Statistics can be manipulated to makes several points.
By just numbers, Islam is probably right.
By a percentage growth, atheism is faster than any thing.
More people going to church was mostly people who called themselves Christians, but didn't go. It was short lived.

I don't know about Islam, but the churches filled up, mine being one of them. Whenever there is a crisis, people seem to remember God and go to church. It has lessened though over time. Same with Christmas, churches are always full then.

You might find a third category as well:
There are more and more people that now believe that religion is a bad thing and may be the end of us all. It leads people to destroy 3000 lives in the WTC buildings as well as bomb attacks on a Danish Embassy building due to a simple comic strip.
