My son has always gone to bed with no problems for naps and bedtime, but now he crys and wants me in the room holding or patting him until he falls asleep.

Just curious how being pregnant or someone close to him being pregnant would influence his sleep pattern??
(especially if i don't even know that i am)

i would wonder what has changed. you said he was having no problems, but now all of a sudden cant sleep without you there... i would wonder if something has happened to cause these behavioral changes. is there a new family member? has a family member been lost? did you move recently? is he going through a growth spurt? it's important that your son be able to get himself to sleep without you there or you will wear yourself ragged trying to be his teddy bear.

if there's been no change, try the suggestion the other person gave about sitting with him and gradually moving away each night

let him snooze on the couch for naps, my 3 year old still takes naps on the couch. but the problem with my 3 year old is that he slept with me from the very first night i had him so when i got him his big boy bedi made a game out of not sleep with mommy by putting a sleeping bag in the living room for about a week or so to get him use to sleeping by himself {and i slept on the couch} and then he would go right to sleep without me in his big boy bed. But as far as your little boy, see if you are pregnant, or if someone really close to him {aunt cousin babysitter} is pregnant because that might be his problem.

I know how you feel my 2 yr old is the same way. What i did was read her a bedtime story, tucked her in and told her it is bed time, If she got up i would place her back in bed after a couple of times she gave up and went to sleep..maybe you should try this out..I hope it helps ya

I would put my son to bed and sit next to his crib, every night I would move further away until he couldnt see me anymore. It took awhile but it worked. You could let him cry but if he starts to cry to hard you should go and comfort him or it could make it worse. Good Luck this is a tough one!

Install a night light and play some soothing calm music - this will help him sleep better.

my son use to do the same thing and i made sure that he was'nt wet, or was thirsty then i told him to lay down in a strong voice and picked him up and up him laying down.. he would get up and i would lay him down.. after a few minutes of this i slapped him on the butt and told him to lay down.. i let him cry a bit but did'nt pick him up. if you let him he'll get use to that and your really in for it. don't cave sweety be tough.
