Does the puppy just want to play or does he need to go out?
Try making puppy sleep else where until he gets older and sleeps all night. Make sure he gets to go potty right before bed time and maybe get him a crate. This site has been very helpful to me. It covers about anything you can think of to help train and keep a puppy. Good Luck!

That's what puppies do. All they want to do is eat, play, and take naps.
I have a 4 month old puppy right now. When we first got him (he was 2 months old) it was horrible! My fiance and I were getting up every couple of hours because he would whine or cry. For a few weeks I hardly got any sleep!
Buy him or her a little bed they can sleep on. They can take naps during the day and then at night when they see you going to bed and the lights off it just sort of "clicks" in their head that it is time for bed. It took my puppy at least a month before he got the hang of it. Now he sleeps through the whole night with my fiance and other dog. Sometimes he'll fuss and we'll let him out, but it's usually only once or twice during the night.
You just have to be patient! Good luck!

Have you given the pup a "place of his own to sleep"? Dogs are known to "Den" , they have a space that is theirs most pick their kennels since it is somewhat enclosed & has walls around then so they feel secure & safe(comes from thousands of years of breeding & survival-if you have walls on three sides of you a preditor cannot sneak up behind to eat you while you sleep). If your dog does not have a "sleep center" that is his get him one or make him one & train him where to sleep. If he sleeps with someone he will wake them when he needs to eat or go to the bathroom.
Has your son gotten up and taken him to potty or fed him?
Also if the puppy is fully rested they will wake someone who plays with them,, could be he is bored and had plenty of sleep since he went to sleep before anyone else. Maybe the puppy wants permission to get on the bed with him.
Some people buy a kennel for the dog so he stays put till they get him out to potty & eat at night.
Others buy auto feeders,, waterers. & dog doors so they can potty when they need to.
Lots of options for pet owners today.
Good luck!!!

because the puppy is awake, because he is on his own natural clock right now, make the puppy sleep elsewhere so the 12 year old can sleep, i would rather deal with a poopy mess than a cranky kid in the morning

My dog does this. Same time too. You just need to let her out to go to the bathroom. She's looking to him for some reason to take her out. It's annoying but when puppy's got to go, they GOT to go!
