You can run regular 87 octane in any engine without any harm unless it is a hign compression engine like say a Vette or a Viper. You may get some "pinging" running a lower octane but it will not harm your engine.

I have a 2000 Camry. I bought it new and still have it. Toyoya manual recommends using regular (87 octane) fuel. It also suggests to experiment with higher octane.
I had tried 89 octane myself for a period of time just to find out what it means. I found no noticeable difference in performance and actually decreased fuel efficiency. I have used 87 since and it still gives me 30+ mpg highway.
IMHO, keeping the tires properly inflated will give you better performance improvement than using higher octane.

You are only supposed to use unleaded gas. Leaded gas is diesel gas, if you put that in your car, it will destroy the engine. When you open the gas tank, it usually says "Unleaded Fuel Only." 87 Octane is the lowest rating that you usually find in the majority of gas stations. 91 or 100 is the highest you will find. The higher the rating, the better performance you will get. A high grade gasoline like 91 Octane from Chevron will help keep your engine clean from engine deposits, which will help keep your engine running nice and smooth.

Okay I know I am a girl but first I would look in the manual and see what it says about what kind of gas to use. Otherwise use regular, I have a 2004 Acura RSX and I use Regular and have never had any problems.

electronic fuel injected engine SHOULD/MUST use unleaded gas.. because this type of engine got oxygen (02) sensor in thier exhaust manifold,.its a 'closed-loop' operated means it tell the cars ECU how much oxygen left unburned 'after' the combustion process..then the car ECU calculates the signal to make the fuel injectors squirt until the correct amount of fueling is reached, if the O2 sensor is covered with carbon deposits from leaded fuel it will giv a diffrent input signal to the ECU and... u know the answer.. it adviseable to use unleaded fuel..

You can use 87 octane on any Toyota, they do not REQUIRE any higher octane for any of their engines. You may possibly get a little better performance with higher octane fuel, but you do not need to use anything other than 87 octane for your Camry.
Hope this helps.

Best to fill with what is recommended!, read your user guide. if your car calls for Premium, then putting regular will affect it's performance.
Best wishes

87 should be fine if it starts to ping or spark knock just go to 89 no harm done.
