I know all birds scream but to those who own one, does he/she scream extremely loud? Like a high pitched girl screaming her lungs out? When we got our umbrella, he was 10 years old. His owner had to move to another state to take care of her father and so she had to get rid of him because she could not take care of both. Is there any way for him to stop this? He does it every morning, all afternoon and sometimes at night.
Thanks,.

We have had him for about a year now, My mother looks like his previous owner, so he is close to her. Of course he has a HUGE cage. When he screams we sometimes cover him u but when we do that he stars making whining/moaning noises.

The trick with cockatoos is to give them affection or treats when they've NOT screamed in a while. And if you can stand it, don't go to them to make them stop. They're smart and soon learn that if they want you all they have to do is scream. By going to them when they're quiet you show them they can get affection by NOT screaming (you'll have to do it often, especially at first).

Parrots of all kinds sometimes have difficulty letting go of a prior relationship and scream when they miss it. I knew one Moluccan cockatoo who missed his prior owner and could make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Good luck.

PS: 5 min being covered up is as good as 5 hours. After 5 min the bird probably has forgotten why you covered him to begin with, so it becomes meaningless and harsh.

oh my
there is a old saying
free+cockatoo= scream
all cockatoos scream, its what they do, it is thier natural behaviour, to scream to flockmates when they wake, when they feed and when they roost

the only thing you can do is to keep the noise level constant in your home, low calm, and ignore the birds screaming, and give her attention only when she is playing with toys, or talking whistling etc.

this is a common problem with cockatoo owners and im afraid there really is no cure, just coping

How long have you had your too? Parrots are incredibly sensitive, and your bird could still be missing his previous owner.

I have never had a too, but I suggest you look at the My Toos site; hopefully you will be able to work on your bird's screaming issue.
